Aesthetically, the Bluicer is an absolute stunner. The blending and juicing attachments sit atop a fingerprint-proof, brushed stainless steel body, which looks sleek and is incredibly easy to keep clean. The pusher, though plastic, is also a sleek silver and without handling it, you wouldn’t guess it was made from a different material to the Bluicer’s housing. Even the inner juicing blade, which you’ll rarely see, is a delight to look at because of its attractive gold colouring. Having said all that, there’s no denying this is a brilliant cold press juicer. No froth, just pure juice, and lots of it – the Kuvings has recorded some of the highest quantities of juice under controlled tests, according to UK Juicers. When I made a juice of just one carrot, orange, beetroot and apple, cut into sizeable chunks, a small piece of ginger and a smattering of parsley and spinach, I was left with enough for a decent glass for three people.

I then tried to juice the mangoes with the Nutri disc instead, which resulted in a more sippable mixture. The two large mangoes yielded 275ml of clear juice, while the discarded flesh was still delicious enough to eat on its own. This is a sturdy, heavy appliance, with a large stainless steel base and two huge plastic receptacles, one for the pulp and the other for up to two litres of juice. Though it’s chunky, it’s still rather sleek and attractive to look at, not an eyesore on the countertop. Smoothness: As we were looking to juice a variety of fruit and veg, it was important the juicers could handle everything we threw their way. The juice produced needed to be a strong, deep and rich colour to indicate that a high level of vitamins and minerals had been extracted. We looked for smooth, clear and vibrant juice. However, once hulled, no part of the strawberries were wasted – whereas juicing would have led to discarded pulp. The resulting puree was good for creating a coulis-type strawberry sauce, which worked wonderfully over some Viennetta. All are straightforward to use because every turn of the dial lights up different suggestions for juicing, from soft fruit at setting ‘1’ to hard veg, apple and pineapple at setting ‘5’.

As cold as a cold press

Sage says the Bluicer uses “cold-spin” technology to prevent the blades, and in turn the juice, from heating up during juicing. This is something centrifugal juicers can suffer from due to the high speed of the blades. It’s difficult to tell exactly how effective this is but the juices I produced certainly didn’t taste warm. Ease of cleaning: We looked for machines with removable components that could be washed in a dishwasher or by hand. Clean-up wasn’t difficult as such, but the Froojie disc and its insert meant there was more washing-up to do. The transparent bowl, juicer lid, pulp bin, juice disc, the jug and its lid are all dishwasher-safe – top shelf only – while the Froojie insert is not. It isn’t clear whether the Froojie disc can be cleaned in the dishwasher; I chose to err on the side of caution.

After using the Froojie disc at the recommended setting ‘1’, the instructions suggest turning the speed up to ‘2’ to eject the final bits of fruit puree – this really does work and is helpful for cleaning purposes as well. We found the best juicer machines to be a breeze to use, with wide chutes to put whole apples and oranges down. The Sage Nutri Juicer Plus comes with two discs: the Nutri disc and the Froojie disc. Unlike more high-tech juicers, all you need to do here is slice your chosen citrus fruit in half, then push the fleshy half onto a rotating press.
