The quest ends with a disguised Chameleon watching Spidey swing away and vowing to do what his brother couldn’t - kill Spider-Man. The mid-credits scene in Spider-Man 2 features a surprising and very welcome cameo appearance by Otto Octavius, who’s now imprisoned in the Raft following his defeat in the first Spider-Man game. So it should come as no surprise that he makes a rather hesitant mentor to Peter Parker, especially as Stark isn’t really the avuncular type.
We’d guess Chameleon will be the focus of a DLC campaign for Spider-Man 2, as he isn’t necessarily a villain who can support his own game. But the film's real superpowers are its endearing performances, and a screenplay by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers that interweaves teen-angst soap opera and cosmic calamity with all the goofy logic and tonal nimbleness that make the best superhero comics so appealing. He then faces off against his rogue vehicle and it becomes apparent that it's being remotely operated by someone.
He learns about a Doctor Turner who wants to analyze his powers, and it transpires that the good doctor has a device that can remove all of Spidey's incredible abilities. I find it especially funny how Spider-man punches a guy so hard square in the jaw that he is launched 20 feet into the air and is slowly suspended in the air for minutes while Spidey pummels the life out of him until he falls to the ground and he is still alive. He's been in love with movies, comic books and video games for as long as he can remember and these obsessions show no signs of slowing down any time soon. This doesn't seem to be a bad Spider-Man game, with some colourful and chunky 16-bit visuals and a whole lot of encounters against iconic foes.
The cel-shaded art style brings that feeling home, leaning into what the PS2/Xbox/GameCube-era hardware was capable of and standing the test of time a little better than its contemporaries as a result.
