Prepare Your Ingredients: Pour the flour, brown sugar, baking powder and salt into a large mixing bowl and stir. The predominant flavour here is definitely the pomegranate, with the rose being more of an aftertaste. Cocktails: from a long fizzy spritz to a classic negroni or martini, gin is the basis for lots of popular cocktails.

Berkshire Botanical Rhubarb and Raspberry Gin, 50 cl

The term pink gin originally referred to a cocktail of Plymouth gin and Angostura bitters, created by the British Navy. To be classed as gin, it must contain juniper berries – but the other chosen botanicals can vary and this is what makes each gin distinct. Traditional botanicals (it packs a juniper-laden punch) come together with both rose petals and hibiscus to give this gin a complex yet floral appeal. In the Rhubarb gin post, I give you 2 recipes, one that takes 4 weeks to proof, and the other, with roasted rhubarb, takes only 5 days before it’s ready to drink. Not only is it vegan, not tested on animals, packaged in a recyclable bottle and made using 100% renewable energy, but it is formulated with 100% natural fragrances and 4 essential oils too. While the brand’s pomegranate liqueur is our usual go-to, this fantastic rhubarb offering is a close second, made even better by being premixed with a fantastic spicy ginger ale. Finish by kneading the dough, then wrap it in cling film and leave it to chill in the fridge for at least an hour. The spirit is made in Scotland’s first carbon-negative distillery, for a pleasing sustainability nod, too. Gins were tasted with plain tonic and then with lemonade to judge how well they tasted with different mixers.

The Morello Cherry is their latest launch, blending the classic London dry gin with juicy Morello cherries that lend sweet yet tart depth to the gin along with their deep red-pink colour. Bake Your Pastry: Cover your pastry with greaseproof paper and baking balls, then blind bake for 20 minutes until light gold. This batch had about a month, but I wouldn't leave it much longer because the colour starts to get duller. This Northamptonshire-based distillery is owned by husband-and-wife team Tom Warner and Tina Keogh-Warner, who have combined seasonal English fruit with their already hugely popular Harrington Dry Gin.

You also get hints of spicy pepper and aniseed, all of which are clean and crisp, making a classic tonic its perfect partner. This variety uses whole pineapples, which are spit-roasted with demerara sugar to give them a caramelised coating.

As a result, choosing the right drink can be an overwhelming task: After all, there’s only so much gin one person can sample, even if it’s your drink of choice. This orange gin would be great in cocktails – we’ve got plenty of citrus cocktail recipes for inspiration – and Sipsmith suggests adding a splash to hot chocolate, too. We love the moreish, natural tasting strawberry flavour that comes through in this gin; it’s hard to believe that there’s absolutely no added sugar in this wonderfully sweet spirit. We looked for the best examples of popular flavoured gins (the kind you'd find in bars and pubs) – so predominantly fruit-based gins, such as rhubarb, raspberry or lemon.
