About this deal

The simplest solution to fix a leaking radiator valve nut is to tighten the nut (clockwise) with an adjustable spanner. If it doesn't have external flats for a spanner then it will have an internal hexagon (Allen key) shape.

Use gas PTFE tape, 7 wraps, turn onto the thread anticlockwise when tail held in left hand thread on the right, so when screwed in, the tape doesn't loosen. Draining the system and adding some jointing compound or PTFE tape is the next level to fix a radiator that is leaking. It was the hardest of all the repairs made, because there was very little lateral movement in the copper pipe. If your radiator is leaking water from the panel, then you will most likely need to replace the radiator.A leaking lockshield valve can be fixed quite easily when it is leaking from the packing gland on the top of the valve.

Just installed a new radiator and valves for mother-in-law, had to cut and shut some pipe but all good. They are incredibly reliable at helping you make those adjustments so that a radiator will fit between existing pipework as it should. I have yet to refit the radiator and fill with water which will be the ultimate test, however I happened to notice that the nut of the radiator tail bound slightly when it was rotated around the tube of the radiator tail, which was not the case before I make it up ?

Consider the size of the room, as larger spaces will likely require radiators with a higher heat output or maybe even multiple radiators in some cases.Or should I disassemble and add even more PTFE tape to the tail, perhaps with jointing compound as well? You could consider using a 1" Male X 3/4" Female iron reducer (or whatever is appropriate for the radiator tapping and valve sizes you have) between the radiator and valve.

While I may be able to fix it if I took it off this is a drain the system job so I want to have a good replacement if necessary. In my experience, a radiator valve leaking when turned off is usually on ancient radiator valves that are worse for wear and should probably be replaced. Radiator valve tails screw into the bottom of radiator tappings; they connect radiators with the valves that control the flow of water through a unit.

Knowing how to fix a leaking radiator valve will help you save money but you might need to replace it. I turned it a little more, but it got very tight and now the drain off section was even further off vertical.
