That’s just not the sort of game Massive Darkness 2 is, but if you wanted a campaign, CMON does offer a campaign expansion in Massive Darkness 2: Heavenfall that looks promising. As with all heroes in Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape, the cards for the original Massive Darkness heroes will tie them to a specific class. The heroes are trying to stop the flood of evil coming from hell, and venture deep into the bowels of this forsaken realm to battle the demons that lurk within. This is the central question at the heart of Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape, a cooperative dungeon crawling board game from CMON games. As noted above, the Massive Darkness 2 Upgrade Pack includes cards for the heroes and monsters found in not just the original base game, but also all the expansion packs.

Massive Darkness 2’s boss fights are fun and intimidating thanks to the epic boss miniatures, but they’re not on the same level as, for example, Dark Souls: The Board Game’s boss fights, which features both epic miniatures and great gameplay. The different dungeon-crawling scenarios will test their mettle, forcing them to work together to overcome the enemy. The asymmetric player powers (and their corresponding special components) left us wanting to re-play quests with different heroes, and the gameplay loop of leveling up in the middle of a quest and gaining loot is extremely satisfying (even if it doesn't carry over from session to session).The copy of Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape used in the creation of this review was provided by Asmodee. New to Massive Darkness 2 are the light/dark spaces, which can grant certain heroes special bonuses. As they fight toward their goals, they'll gain valuable loot and level up as they work through the scenario.

There's a cool mechanic in play here with character health: when a player's character drops to zero hit points, you activate and flip over a Lifebringer token which brings you back with some HP.

The attack action in Massive Darkness 2: Hellscape is where a lot of the fun of the game comes from, as each Hero can use their different weapons and special abilities (which we'll cover in greater detail in the next section) to fight against mobs of enemies. The Rogue comes with a literal bag of tricks full of tokens, some of which grant them bonuses while others are blank. In other words, for her to access the resources she needs to do her special powers, she needs to take damage in combat!

With no game master and streamlined rules, players take their heroes on a series of quests to defeat the forces of Darkness. The Massive Darkness 2 Upgrade Pack will be available Day 1 of the Kickstarter and will be included FOR FREE with every pledge that includes the base game. Moreover, the loot isn’t as specialized as other games, so even if a warrior draws a wizard’s staff, he can still make decent use of it. I personally prefer more tactics and more story in a game if I’m going to devote this much time to it, but that doesn’t mean Massive Darkness 2 is a bad game.Massive Darkness 2’s heroes are some of the most fun characters I’ve played as in any board game, and their leveling system is deep without being overwhelming. Massive Darkness 2 Hellscape is a cooperative tabletop dungeon crawler where one to six players take on the role of Lightbringers - heroes dedicated to protecting the world from the (massive) darkness that threatens to overwhelm the realm. The heroes will have their work cut out for them as all these familiar favorites flood back into the dungeons and dark hallways once more, levelled up and ready to go. Players use at most 5 of these cards during a given scenario, so there’s also strategic variation within each hero as well.
