About this deal

Christopher Eccleston (The A Word, The Leftovers) takes the role of Fagin and David Threlfall (Shameless, Housewife, 49) plays Chief of Police, Sir Charles Rowan, in Dodger, a new ten-part family adventure set to air next year on CBBC and BBC iPlayer.

Rhys Thomas and Lucy Montgomery have taken Charles Dickens’ extraordinary characters and imagined a whole new world and lives for them. Dodger chases the men off while two other onlookers tend to the woman, who is in grave need of a doctor. Prachett's game-playing abounds; he introduces Sweeney Todd to the story, gleefully paying no heed to the twin facts that the Demon Barber is not only fictional but hadn't even been written at the time. He is introduced as a member of parliament and is to play a supporting role in Dodger’s scheme to fake Simplicity’s death.

The novel closes with Dodger’s realization that Serendipity is the “tosheroon” he has been looking for his whole life. Some readers grumble about the references to Charles Dickens … either they are too overt, spoiling the fun (but might encourage children to read Dickens)—or conversely that it might be enjoyed by those who have not read anything by Charles Dickens!

He's not about to let anything happen to the unknown girl - not even if her fate impacts some of the most powerful people in England. Told with wit and vigour, this is an enormously entertaining story full of dry humour and with plenty of jokes to tickle fans of Dickens. First edition first printing, 2012, good-plus clean firm interior, no marks or inscriptions, contains black and white illustrations at start of each chapter, toned to page block, good clean firm boards with some slight shelf wear, all tight; bright firm d/jacket, showing only light usage, nick to lower front l. The point I'm making is that I can't be objective when it comes to this author - the Discworld books are too much a part of my life; I cried while watching TP's deeply personal euthanasia documentary; I know certain Discworld characters better than I know members of my extended family. The boards and text block are square ,tight and clean, the dust jacket is also very good but has the ghost of a sticker on the front cover. When I first started reading Dodger, I assumed that the story would revolve around Dodger and his adventures around London as a tosher. Pretty fun romp down London sewers nevertheless, although I wish Pratchett stuck with writing an original mystery rather than putting all these famous figure at the center of it all. Their existence in the story made Dodger's light speed ascend from rags to riches made it ever so more implausible. According to the author's afterword, the story is set "broadly in the first quarter of Queen Victoria's reign", which would be between 1837 and 1853.

A most excellent guide to London, with special interest in its underbelly, from the wretches of the rookeries to the fancy coves at Buckingham Palace, Dodger will show you every dirty inch of London. meets Queen Victoria (probably the most powerful person in the world at that time) - and is accepted as virtually her equal. In this case we have “The Outlander”, a wanted assassin who has been hired to kill Simplicity and Dodger. The government does not want to get involved, though, as knowingly harboring a fugitive from the German states might cause turmoil to their country-to-country politics. Amy Buscombe is Commissioning Editor for the BBC for Malory Towers, Still So Awkward, Jamie Johnson and Mystic.

Along the way he’ll befriend Charles Dickens, outwit Sweeny Todd and reach the giddy heights of Victorian society. Terry Pratchett, best known for his long-running science fiction series Discworld, takes on a new type of fantasy with his 2012 novel, Dodger.
