About this deal

Also, this has the famous faceless on-panel appearance of Mary Jane where she looks like a flower is eating her face. Also, any excuse for Romita Black Widow is fine by me, especially with the debut of her Emma Peel costume that is still iconic! So many classic side characters and villains are introduced in this run, and we even get a couple almost sightings of a certain Mary Jane Watson. With so many classic moments and characters, this Omnibus delivers it all with wonderful reproductions and colour work including the letters and design of the original. I’ve bemoaned some of the melodrama, but the Betty-Peter breakup is pretty intense and more real than many of their interactions.

In the early issues they are still trying to find out what kind of magazine it was and they got the perfect formula that precioussly worked from then on somewhere near the first annual; 2. And despite his best efforts, he gets Captain Stacy killed, adding fuel to the fire that is his guilt complex.

My favorite character was Betty Brant because she highlighted what a self-obsessed prick Peter Parker was. It was a reminder of how well Stan Lee can juggle all of the aspects of Peter Parker's life: the bad luck, lack of money, girl troubles, dealing with Jonah and of course fighting super villains. The protests continue, though their goal seems less focused and designed to get Spider-man to fight with Jameson. Partly because of his immaturity and that need to stay closeted less the Jamesons do anything worse. A heck of an opening puts this above an average Spidey adventure, but it’s mostly an average punch out with the Shocker with a side of Peter being a jerk.

The Jackal does sort of come off as knock-off Green Goblin, but his willingness to ally with and use others does give him some uniqueness. So, this is essentially a continuation and expansion of the elements from the Chameleon story in issue 1. The depiction of the females in this book definitely feel like the 60's though, with all the women being suddenly attracted to Peter and Aunt May going in and out of the hospital and not much else. The Tarantula arrives, and he’s at least got a somewhat new scheme that causes complications for Spider-Man. I think that John Jameson’s relationship with his girlfriend should have been a larger part of the story, but the resolution was fairly clever, and Man-Wolf’s strengths are still relevant. I really do think Romita was overtaxed in the last issue because he gets an art assist here (one of the assistants is Jim Starlin who would dominate Marvel Cosmic later). The Goblin has Spider-Man go to two different and incredibly far away states… to surprise attack him.
