Navigable as far inland as Totnes, sections of the river upstream are popular with canoeists and kayakers. Admire the superb medieval architecture throughout the town. There are some extraordinary half-timbered buildings, including the Klunkhardshof and Brömserhof.Under the Duke of Sully, the population grew and then, under Colbert, the wealth of the town expanded exponentially. It was during this time that St Martin’s Fair was founded, and still exists to this day. Before railroads and highways were developed, the River Rhône was the main inland trade route, connecting the cities of Arles, Avignon, Valence, Vienne and Lyon to the Mediterranean ports of Fos-sur-Mer, Marseile and Sète. It also helped spread Greek and later Roman influence from the Mediterranean to western, central and northern Europe. In particular, it aided the spread of a specific confectionery now most associated with the city of Montélimar – nougat. St Goar is one of the most underrated Rhine river towns, with many half-timbered buildings and medieval alleys to wander. I also suggest heading to the riverside park to see the Binger Mäuseturm, the toll tower on an island in the middle of the river. When I was writing my composition, someone shouted at the classes: “Pete and Adam are playing Frisbee!” At once, I put down my pen and rushed out the classroom. Really, they are! … The two sports men stood far away from Frisbee each other and began to play. How wonderful it looked! The Frisbee was like a red fire, flying person to person between the two men. I have seen it for a long time. Foreigners are so versatile. This is a China where young people don’t plan their own futures and instead await job assignments from the central planning bureaucracy. The young people follow Communist Party teachings although they now question them, and Hessler describes how fascinating it is to see how this affects their interpretations of American and English writings. The students teach Hessler more about China and the realities of rural life than he can ever teach them about literature.

He found himself teaching English and American literature at the local college, discovering how Shakespeare and other classics look when seen through the eyes of students who have been raised in the Sichuan countryside and educated in Communist Party doctrine. His students, though, are the ones who taught him about the ways of Fuling -- and about the complex process of understanding that takes place when one is immersed in a radically different society. It had, by then, become largely Christian and from the end of the 3rd century constituted the Ancient Diocese of Orange. The town suffered during the Wars of Religion, the 16th Century conflict between the Catholics and Protestants, and changed sides several times. Bullet marks on the cliff walls can still be seen. In 1567, the Protestants were finally driven out of the town, and a Catholic garrison of 60 soldiers moved into the city.
