So at this point please make sure not to spray the pins directly. Please mist into the MonoTub so the mist falls down over the pin heads. There’s a lot of detail for this stage – way too much to cover in any useful way in this article – but it’s totally do-able for most people, regardless of your skills. I’ve built a few different fruiting room designs over the years, but our most recent one is the cheapest and simplest, built inside a hydroponics grow tent like this one.
The tent's height extension feature also sets it apart from other grow tents, allowing growers to increase the height of the tent for taller plants. Low-tech mushroom growing is a method we’ve been working on over the last few years which doesn’t require the large, expensive and energy-intensive equipment normally used in commercial mushroom growing. Most other gourmet varieties so far have produced mixed results, but through lots of experiments we’re now having reliable and good success with Shiitake mushrooms – one of the most highly prized gourmet varieties. This one is a transparent mini-greenhouse with four levels of detachable shelving. It’s quite narrow but tall, meaning you can fit a lot of cakes or grow bags into very little floor-floor space. Some customers have had trouble with rust on the shelves, but a coat of spray-paint protects against that. The price is admirably low, a great value. This is the one you want if you are using the Martha method. Place the temperature probe of the thermostat on the inside edge of the third shelf up from the floor. This will measure the warmest flow of air and give the most even results.If you want a fully equipped Martha tent, then we recommend adding a light source that you can turn on and off. Nearby health or wholefoods stores: people who appreciate fresh & local food tend to either get a veg box or they shop for it at specialist food stores. Keep going until you see small white dots form on the surface of the substrate or 20 days have passed. Your local farmers market: farmers markets have become massive in recent years as people seek out high quality produce from small artisan producers. Take your mushrooms along and you’ll find plenty of interest.Some growers also like to include an LED light in their (martha) mushroom grow tent to help with certain parts of the grow cycle. As you may know, light can be used when growing certain mushrooms to spur fruiting of the mushrooms. The last thing you will need for your SGFC is a spray bottle with a fine mist. Several times a day you will want to open the lid and fan to get some fresh air movement, and then spray water into the chamber. This should help to maintain high humidity. If you want to know where you are at, get a cheap hygrometer to monitor the humidity levels. It will also tell you the temperature. Keep your SGFC by a window or in room that receives a moderate level of natural diffuse light.
How you’ll set up your grow tent depends on what kind of tent you get and, to some extent, on what kind of mushrooms you’re growing. Fungi need a little light to fruit—that’s how they know where the outside of the substrate is. They don’t want to produce mushrooms inside the middle of the cake where the spores would be wasted, so they look for light. The light doesn’t have to be direct or bright, so because this tent is see-though, you can simply put it in your living-room and take advantage of your windows and room lights. Your living room is probably also close to the fungus’s ideal fruiting temperature, but you may need to use a reptile heat pad to warm it up a bit. Make sure it does not get too warm.
All of that moisture will need to go somewhere; it will condense on the walls and drip down. The entire tent needs to sit in a tray that can catch the drips. If the tent has a floor, be prepared for a little water to collect there.
