Absolutely no disappointment here! For those who don't know the story, Mrs. Frisby is a field mouse with four children. Her son Timothy gets pneumonia and cannot be moved from their winter home. The problem is that the farmer is about to plow the fields. If Mrs. Frisby doesn't find a solution about what to do for Timothy then he will die. Frisby discovers that the rats have a literate and mechanized society. They have technology such as elevators, have tapped the electricity grid to provide lighting and heating, and have acquired other human skills, such as storing food for the winter. Their leader, Nicodemus, tells Frisby of the rats' capture by scientists working for a laboratory located at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) and the experiments that were performed on the rats, which increased the rats' intelligence to the point of being able to read, write and operate complicated machines, as well as enhancing their longevity and strength. Their increased intelligence and strength allowed them to escape from NIMH and migrate to their present location on the farm. Jonathan and Ages were the only two survivors of a group of eight mice who had been part of the experiments at NIMH and made the rats' escape possible. Chapters 1-3: In the beginning of the story, the reader meets Mrs. Frisby, a mouse whose husband has died, and finds out where she lives on the farm. Timothy, Mrs. Frisby’s son, is ill with pneumonia, and this causes her great concern. Mrs. Frisby goes to Mr. Ages, a wise old mouse, to get medicine for Timothy. Chapters 7 & 8: At first the owl is reluctant to help Mrs. Frisby until he finds out that she is the widow of Johnathan Frisby. The owl suggests she seek help from the rats that live under the rose bush. This is an interesting introduction to science-fiction for young readers. I mean rats and a few mice with special intellectual properties that want to build their own successful community... What's not to be interested in? The story has aged really well because there isn't anything to date it, like mentioning popular fashion choices of the time, so really anyone can read it. A live-action/animated remake was reported to be in development; James Madigan was attached to direct. Normally it's a mixed bag with books that win this award for me, but this time I can say this book deserved the award. This is a really good book. Unraveling as a story within a story, there are a lot of really interesting characters presented who each provide missing pieces for the “secret” storyline, and/or serve to better contextualize the greater world of sentient animals living on the farm. My only critique would be that given the large cast of rodents (and birds) in such a small book, I was given just enough plot cheese to nibble on without ever really feeling full on complete character development. I’ll admit, I recently found myself re-watching Don Bluth’s film adaptation The Secret of NIMH, which peaked my curiosity to seek out the source material. While I first saw this film as an adult, I cannot say that this story evokes much childhood nostalgia for me as it does for the many others who grew up with the brave, widowed Mrs. Frisby and the ingenious, yet secretive rats. I understand that it is illogical and irrational that a creature so small should provoke such terror in me, but it's true.

The first complaint is that the pacing of the story can be a bit slow. Still that could be due to the fact books were written at a slower pace in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. The second complaint is that I'm not super happy that we don't know what happened to Justin the Rat either. I like the idea of him and Mrs. Frisby getting to know each other better. Lastly, what happened to Jenner!? Were 6 or 7 rats killed? Is he alive or dead? There are so many unanswered questions that we'll never know because Mr. O'Brien died before he could write a sequel. His daughter did continue the series but as her own writings, which I'm not counting as a true continuation since Mr. O'Brien didn't have any say for those books.a b c d e f Silver, Arahshiel R. They figure out how to escape through the air ducts. However, there is a fan that blows away several of the smaller mice. There is a screen that prevents the rats from getting outside, but they unscrew the bolts and get outside. They go outside and live in a mansion during the winter. This book was the winner of numerous awards including the 1972 Newbery Medal. [3] Ten years following its publication, the story was adapted for film as The Secret of NIMH (1982). [4] The development comes as Fox heads into the second phase of its animation strategy. Two of the key planks of this plan is ownership and expanding its animated slate to include more adult fare. In 1982, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH became the basis for the animated film The Secret of NIMH, the directorial debut of Don Bluth. In 1998, a sequel to the film called The Secret of NIMH 2: Timmy to the Rescue was released. The sequel has no connection to Racso and the Rats of NIMH and was met with poor reception.

Chapters18-20: Nicodemus continues telling his story to Mrs. Frisby and includes how the rats learned to read, how reading signs helped the rats escape from NIMH, and how they escaped with Johnathan and Mr. Ages. He explains how they found a place to live, the Boniface Estate. In a retrospective essay about the Newbery Medal-winning books from 1966 to 1975, children's author John Rowe Townsend wrote: "It seems to me that the fact that all the animals talk and behave intelligently from the beginning of the story detracts from the spectacular development of the laboratory rats... Even if she is the typical "mom", dodging cats and getting milk for her kids she is also a mouse with a big heart, helping other animals in need and ultimately being the hero of the book. The rats of NIMH were inspired by the research of John B. Calhoun on mouse and rat population dynamics at the National Institute of Mental Health from the 1940s to the 1960s.
