About this deal

It mimics the look of classic film cameras pretty well, with the faux leatherette coating both looking genuine from afar and also making it easier to grip than the smooth, shiny surface on the LiPlay. The textured coating is made from plastic, though, not true leather.

If there was ever an Instax Mini camera deserving of being called "pro," the Instax Mini Evo is it. The Instax Mini Evo is a beautiful homage to film cameras and one that nobody would be embarrassed to pull out at any event. It’s best to view the digital versions of the photos as just a guide to let you know what you should bother to print. They don’t stand up on their own when viewed on a computer screen, and certainly aren’t ones you’re likely to want to keep or use for any other purpose than for printing in the small Instax size. Only printed photos and images in your print history can be transferred. Up to 50 photos are saved in your print history so be sure to transfer your shots over regularly to keep them on your phone. What memory card does the instax mini Evo take? It’s also something you might consider a good present for children, or anybody who might not be in possession of even the most basic smartphone, which in 2022 is likely to surpass the image quality of the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo’s camera. Unique to the mini Evo is ten integrated lens modes and ten film effect filter options that offer 100 different combinations for photographers to express themselves and create one-off, unique shots. And when paired with instax mini instant film, the mini Evo creates the highest-ever quality instax instant prints to date, 600 dpi, when printed directly from the camera. The mini Evo creates the highest-ever quality instax instant prints to date, printing at 600 dpi when printed directly from the camera.

Despite the dials, snapping photos with the Instax Mini Evo is a push-button experience. The camera has two shutter releases—one at the top, for when you hold it in landscape orientation, and a front button to use when you hold the camera vertically for portraits or selfies. A mirror next to the lens helps you frame self-portraits. Controls feel a little cramped, but get the job done. Using the camera is pretty much entirely automatic thanks to the Program AE mode. The Instax Mini Evo automatically optimizes the shutter speed (1/4 second to 1/8000 second), flash output, ISO speed (100 to 1600) and other key settings according to the current shooting conditions.

Print From Your Phone Via Bluetooth

Use your smartphone to control the camera. Get your shot set up then release the camera shutter using your phone as a remote control. Whereas 2019's Instax Mini LiPlay sported a fun design designed to be attractive to a younger audience, the new Instax Mini Evo is a much more serious affair. The main menu features a number of different settings which you can change, including face detection, switching the AF illuminator on or off (you might wish to switch it off if you’re trying to shoot somewhere discreetly), print settings, bluetooth settings, date and time and so on. On the bottom of the Instax Mini Evo is a hidden slot for inserting a microSD memory card. The Mini Evo comes with an inbuilt memory which can store approximately 45 images, while up to 850 images can be stored per 1GB of memory on a Micro SD card - so it’s well worth investing in one of those unless you want to frequently delete your images. You get a little bit of internal memory (enough to store about 45 photos), but you need to add a microSD or microSDHC memory card to save additional ones—about 850 images per gigabyte. Memory cards are inexpensive enough, but a more useful amount of internal memory would have been nice. Instax Mini Evo in the Hand

One of the most useful app functions is the “direct print” option, which allows you to print any image which you have stored on your phone. This effectively turns the Mini Evo into a portable Instax Mini printer, and is a great way to use to print better photos than the onboard camera is capable of capturing. When you’re ready to print one of your shots, pull the delightfully retro Print lever on top of the camera - sure, the same thing could have been achieved with a simple button, but where's the fun in that?! The transfer works both ways. Every image that you snap on the camera is automatically saved to the mini Evo. Simply transfer your shots onto your smartphone for sharing with the digital world –the instax frame even transfers too! Looking to upgrade your equipment? Also on the top plate we find a large ridged metal dial set flush to the body which is unmarked, but which a glance at the booklet in the box reveals is a ‘film dial’ for selecting the 10 different film effects promised up front. It then makes sense that turning the ridged lens dial surrounding the lens itself runs through the 10 different lens settings. There’s a cute animation of the photo rolling off the screen and “into” your print as it comes out of the film slot on top. Raymond Wong / Input
