About this deal

Children who are receiving additional phonics ‘keep-up’ sessions read their reading practice book to an adult daily. o Children in Reception are taught to read and spell words using Phase 2 and 3 GPCs, and words with adjacent consonants (Phase 4) with fluency and accuracy. At Princes Risborough Primary, we believe that reading and writing is an essential life skill and we are dedicated to enabling our children to become enthused, engaged and successful lifelong readers and writers. To support this, we practise the ‘Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised’ Phonics scheme and implement the following:

There are plenty of ways of making the Letters and Sounds program fun. Using alphabet sounds flashcards and turning your teaching into a game can be a great place to start. o Children in Year 1 review Phase 3 and 4 and are taught to read and spell words using Phase 5 GPCs with fluency and accuracy. Assessment is used to monitor progress and to identify any child needing additional support as soon as they need it. Lesson templates, prompt cards and 'how to' videos ensure teachers all have a consistent approach and structure for each lesson. For more on phase 2, take a look at these Sound Cards or these phonics mini books Level 2. How can I make learning Letters and Sounds fun? A sharing book. Your child will not be able to read this on their own. This book is for you both to read and enjoy together. Making something competitive can encourage some children to pay attention and engage. You could challenge children to find objects that begin with a certain sound. They could bring the objects in or take photographs. You can use our Phase 2, 3 and 5 Phonemes Sound Mat as a light warm-up activity to jog the memory before moving onto this fun yet challenging task! We ensure our Preschool pupils are well prepared to begin learning grapheme-phoneme correspondences (GPCs) and blending in Reception.

We provide a balance of child-led and adult-led experiences for all children that meet the curriculum expectations for ‘Communication and language’ and ‘Literacy’. These include: o use books matched to the children’s secure phonic knowledge (Big Cat Little Wandle: Letters and Sounds Revised) The best way of learning something is to do it and then teach someone else. These letters and sounds flashcards are designed to make KS1 children speak out loud and challenge their friends to do the same. Any child who needs additional practice has regular keep-up support, led by a fully trained adult. Keep-up lessons match the structure of class teaching, and use the same procedures, resources and mantras, but in smaller steps with more repetition, so that every child secures their learning. Children across Years 4 – 6 who need additional support will have regular 1:1 reading with decodable books.

At Princes Risborough Primary Schoolwe aim to ensure that weprovide all children with the fundamental skills that will enable them to be confident and fluent readers. Weekly content grids map each element of new learning to each day, week and term for the duration of the programme. In Years 2 and 3, we continue to teach reading in the same way as Key Stage 1, for any children who still need to practise reading with decodable books. We use the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ assessments to identify the gaps in their phonic knowledge and teach to these using the keep-up resources at pace.

Alphabet sounds flashcards like these are specifically designed to teach children how to read through the use of phonemes and graphemes instead of memorising the individual letters. This follows the ideas behind the Letters and Sounds program by the Department for Education. Due to the impact of the Covid 19 pandemic we have adapted our current Phonics programme to meet the needs of the children. Listen to them read the book. Remember to give them lots of praise – celebrate their success! If they can’t read a word, read it to them. After they have finished, talk about the book together. We all use the same language, routines and resources to teach children to read so that we lower children’s cognitive load. You might also like this Phase 4 Phonics Bingo Game. What does this letter and sounds flashcards set contain? We start teaching Phonics in Preschool ('Little Wandle Foundation for Phonics') and follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised progression, which ensures children build on their growing knowledge of the alphabetic code, mastering phonics to read and spell as they move through school. This book has been carefully matched to your child’s current reading level. If your child is reading it with little help, please don’t worry that it’s too easy – your child needs to develop fluency and confidence in reading.
