Now, HBO could start mastering its content in 4K HDR, like Netflix does with its live-action originals. That would allow the company to broadcast the existing 1080i standard-dynamic-range version of Game of Thrones via the linear HBO television channel, and deliver a 4K HDR feed to streaming viewers via HBO Go/Now. This principal cast brings to life the complexities of both the Targaryen dynasty and their own motivations. Thrones had a pretty clear line between its heroes and villains – infamously so for its villains – but Houseis in contrast where all the characters are capable of morally grey actions. As the family splits into two factions, each side has their own valid points for what they do, making the line between good and evil murkier and the cast deliver incredibly well on these layered performances. House of the Dragon episodes are dark though. Such has been the commonplace of many darker dramas. You might consider brightening your screen if the imagery is too obscure. We tested in cinema mode on two different TV screens, and both were on the dark side even in daylight scenes. We’re waiting to get more details from Sky regarding the exact 4K schedule, and will update this article accordingly.

The production on the show is to a grand scale with its costume design, sets, locations and cinematography. Each element adds to how immersive the series is and give it its own look and feel separate to Game of Thrones. The visual effects also stand out as there are many more dragons in this show, each one given its own distinctive features, and a few battle sequences that showcase the devastation dragons add to the chaos. It’s visually stunning, especially with the 4K presentation that makes everything pop, but the story is captivating even with some of the abrupt time jumps the season introduces and expects you to go along with. It emphasizes the biggest draw isn’t necessarily the schemes for the Iron Throne, but the characters and how their motivations and viewpoints put their family and friendships to the test. This year Foxtel has doubled the amount of live hours in 4K Ultra HD available across sport – increasing to more than 200 hours – making it the largest broadcaster of 4K Ultra HD content in Australia, and now the home of one of the most popular entertainment franchises in 4K Ultra HD – House of the Dragon. However, only some of Sky’s customers will be able to watch the show in 4K, and apparently not during the live airing.
