Finding all these treasures before time runs out is the only way to win the game. If the islands vanish before accomplishing the objective, there is no starting over. Your team must strategically plan every single move to win the game. The Others is a maze of plot twists and turns, victories and defeats, and life and death. Dead of Winter is a great, fresh, and modern take on a zombie theme that combines psychological mettle with contagious, flesh-eating monsters. It has both co-operative and individual elements, and players have to balance them out to be efficient and eventually win the game. Victory isn’t clear-cut as everyone as well as individual players can both win and lose. And that’s where I think the charm of Ghost Stories lies. Players are in for the fight of their lives and they will lose, a lot. But when they win, oh boy is it sweet. I rarely savor a victory in a board game like I do in Ghost Stories. When I win in this game (it can happen), I really have a sense of accomplishment. The Best Paranormal Board Games are those that, well, have the best paranormal stuff. The dictionary defines paranormal as not scientifically explainable. Some synonyms include metaphysical, otherworldly, preternatural, supernatural, transcendent, transcendental and unearthly. It is grounded in reality to an extent, but not quite explainable.Ghost Stories comes in a standard sized square box. You know the kind by now. It fits pretty easily on our shelf without any need to make adjustments. For cooperative gaming, each team has one simple objective, and that is to catch all the agents that belong to them before the other team gets ahold of theirs. Each team has a spymaster who is the only person to know the identities of the agents. Some locations on the board have special markers for Relics and Popular Places. These give extra special abilities to their owners like conquering a new region with fewer units or bonus points at the end of your turn.

As it is a cooperative game, you have to work with your teammates to protect your cherished homeland. In the game box, you get four scenarios to play through, each one taking one to two hours each. In the scenarios you’ll investigate different locations in Arkham looking for clues, meeting other characters and defeating the monsters you come across along the way. In this particular Forbidden game, your main goal is to “recover a legendary flying machine buried deep in the ruins of an ancient desert city.” This is a cooperative game, so you need to cooperate with your teammates to beat the game and survive until the end. On their turn, a player moves their character to a location on their board and takes the actions there. That’s how a basic turn goes. So after you’ve learnt what the different action means, it’s all about playing the right strategy to beat your opponents.

The depth and creativity here are unmatched. The game is great too. You and your team of 3 – 6 players all enter a haunted house to take on some supernatural force BUT about halfway through it is revealed that one of you is a traitor and it becomes an all-out battle of you versus them. Last Bastion is a cooperative tower defense game in which you’re trying to defend your fort against a horde of monsters and stay alive long enough to defeat the Warlord. This is kind of a fantasy remake of Ghost Stories, one of the toughest co-op board games ever made (and one of the best cooperative games out there). One thing that could turn people away from Ghost Stories initially is how difficult it is. Even on the “easiest” level, it is very possible to lose five out of six games. With new ghosts appearing each turn, it can be overwhelming to beat them and can get a bit frustrating. That being said, when you do get those rare wins, it just….feels…GREAT!

The app is available for Android, iOS, and desktop users.The monsters and the Warlords have a number of resistance icons/colors on their cards that represent their health. When you fight them you’ll roll three dice and try to meet or exceed their resistance. You’ll gain different colored Equipment tokens throughout the game that can help you defeat monsters when you don’t roll well. Then I started hearing about Ghost Stories, a game in which you play as Taoist monks defending a small Chinese village from a demon ghost invasion. It sounded neat, and I eventually managed to acquire it. We’ve played the crap out of it since then!
