About this deal

The width of the Oort Cloud is not known precisely, but it is estimated to begin at about 1,000 astronomical units (AU) from the sun and to extend to about 100,000 AU. One AU is the distance from the sun to Earth. It will take about 300 years for Voyager 2 to reach the inner edge of the Oort Cloud and possibly 30,000 years to fly beyond it. At last, a tall figure emerged from the mists. First came the glint of steel, the position and angle suggesting a longsword held in a high guard. Next came the shimmer of a chainmail surcoat partly covered by a hooded cloak of pure white trimmed in silver and emblazoned with three azure eyes across the front.

Artifact Space by Miles Cameron – Pile By the Bed Artifact Space by Miles Cameron – Pile By the Bed

Artifact Space is what fans of Star Trek the Next Generation who've longed for something updated and more reflective of a diverse human society yet still holds to that same core of optimism and idealism about human beings have been waiting for. It's filled with intriguing space ship troubles, conflicts large and small, the spirit of camaraderie one would hope we'd achieve when going into space, and yet with all the intricacies of our human foibles intact rather than glossed over. This is a new all-time favorite! A wonderfully upbeat military space opera in the tradition of Horatio Hornblower and Honor Harrington, but updated and perfect for modern readers. It's as if someone had looked at my list of favorite things and thought "okay, how about I put ALL of them in a single novel"? Another aspect of Artifact Space I enjoyed was that – as one would expect on a massive ship hurtling through space – the book is somewhat episodic. It's not one long, drawn-out singular problem (though there is a mystery that threads the entire narrative), but more the ongoing adventures of Marca NBaro and the crew of the Greatship Athens. If that sounds like a pitch for this to be a television series, it is; I really, really want to see this as a TV show that sits somewhere between Star Trek the Next Generation and The Expanse. Traitor’s Blade Can a disgraced swordsman save a young girl caught in the web of a royal conspiracy? The greatest concerns about keeping the probes operating, she said, involve power and temperature. The nuclear-powered Voyager 2 loses about 4 watts of power a year, and mission scientists have to shut off systems to keep instruments operating. One of the enemy wonderists, a silver-haired woman already dripping with nervous sweat, took the lead. Blood seeped from her eyes as she cast a sorcerous incantation we in the business call a ‘heartchain’, because it pierces right through defensive spells to burst the enemy’s blood vessels. It’s not the sort of thing any of us would use because it’s a conjoined sympathy spell, which means a heartchain also kills the person casting it. I marvelled at the old codger’s redoubtable courage and sacrifice as the thread-like silver tether stretched across the two hundred yards between them to bind her heart to Corrigan’s.

And then there’s the question raised in the Houston “technosignatures” conference: What actually is meant by an artifact?

Immediately after its discovery, telescopes around the world were called into action to measure the object’s trajectory, brightness and color. Combining the images from several large telescopes, a team of astronomers led by Karen Meech of the Institute for Astronomy in Hawaii found that Oumuamua varies in brightness by a factor of 10 as it spins on its axis every 7.3 hours. He was about to give the mule’s flanks an encouraging nudge when a voice shouted out from the mists, ‘Hold where you are!’ I have a lot of thoughts about this book that are neither good nor bad -- but rather thoughts about what the book is and what it isn't, and who might enjoy it. I'll share them for that specific reason...so that people who might like it can find it. With all the thrills and intrigue of classic Space Opera served with a very modern heart, Artifact Space is a wild and hugely entertaining story

The storm is not so deafening that you failed to hear me the first time,’ he replied, widening his stance and raising the blade of his rapier. ‘Now, stop where you are. Inclement weather and poor soil make for arduous grave-digging, and I have more pressing business at the abbey.’ Now I've read Artifact Space I know what it's really going to be like serving aboard an armed interstellar merchant ship, with a smart lead character as my companion. Can't wait for part two. My name is Sir Daven Colraig,’ the young knight declared, hugging Estevar with frantic relief. ‘I am Sheriff Outrider to His Lordship, Margrave Someil. It was he who commanded me to await you here these past seven days.’ Miles takes what is basically Star Trek’s idea of a Wagon Train to the Stars – the Greatships form a supply line for the rare xenoglas – and add to it all the things that made Star Trek work – likeable characters, strange planets and alien encounters. There is data on the orbit of this object for which there is no other explanation” than that it is the product of intelligent others,” he has said. “The approach I take to the subject is purely scientific and evidence-based.” In preparation for the potentially deep space travels for the Voyager spacecrafts, both were fitted with a greeting for any intelligent life that might be encountered. What follows is a delight. The plot dips and dives as Nbaro and her friends try to save the Athens from an unknown fate. In the process, Nbarro works through some of the baggage her early years saddled her with. It is both a familiar structure and a surprising one that works well in Cameron’s hands. The author provided me with an early proof to read, as I organised an event for him in 2019 and we were discussing something in the future. It was not provided for purposes of review, but given I enjoyed it so much, what the hell. Estevar’s fever-addled brain rebelled against him, alerting him instead to the flush in his cheeks and the burning ache in his side. What business did he have setting foot upon the ill-fated isle at the end of that storm-drenched causeway armed with nothing but a rapier, his arrogance and a cantankerous mule?
