About this deal

Once you’ve prepared your speaker wire by stripping it, it’s time to use a crimp connect on each wire and a tool to crimp them for a reliable connection. Using a typical and reasonable example, we can use 16AWG stranded copper wire with 19 strands of 29AWG wire (“19/29”). Resistance per meter is rated at 0.0147Ω/m. [1]

For surround sound and center channel home theater speakers, you shouldn’t spend a lot because their power needs are usually fairly low.

What doesn’t matter for cable quality?

I do that sometimes for wire terminal strips because they can also be a pain to keep wire in place when tightening it down. A bonus of doing it that way is that it won’t oxidize like normal exposed speaker wire conductors do over timne. Aluminum offers a lighter weight and lower cost than copper, so at first it may seem like a great way to replace the more expensive copper options. However, there’s a problem. A 3rd way (if you have the tools handy) is to strip off additional insulation then use a soldering iron to saturate the speaker wire fully. Next you can bend it into a nice rigid semi-circle (like a hook shape) that won’t move when you try to tighten the binding posts on top of it. Hold both ends and tightly twist each end around the other until they’re completely wrapped over each other. Insert the wires into each speaker terminal one at a time up to (but not including) the insulation. While holding to keep it from moving, twist the tops down firmly on it to hold it in place.

Speaker Wire Gauges Explained: Which Do You Need? - How-To Geek

For best results, once you’re done pull gently on the wire while holding the connector. The wire shouldn’t come out. If it does, you’ve crimped it poorly and will need to do it over again. What should correctly connected speaker wire look like? With a finger or thumb, push each clip one at a time and insert the wire into the hole (insert enough to fit well into the opening). The terminals are basically rectangular and are often two .250″ wide tabs or one .250″ and one .187″. For smaller speakers, one may have .110″ width. (These connectors are harder to find but a .187″ can sometimes be crimped more to make it fit.)

Loosen the set screw, but don’t remove it fully. Just enough that the screw is mostly out of the way of the internal wire opening. For connectors with metal shells, you’ll need to remove them first in many cases. (Note: some connectors may have 2 screws) Buying & using speaker cable is definitely one of those cases where the old advice “better to have too much than not enough” applies! You don’t want to run out because you didn’t plan ahead. Speaker Wires are the subject of ongoing controversy. To connect speakers to amplifiers, some people spend cheap cable. But even though speaker wires are pricey, some audiophiles conduct extensive studies to find the best-performing models.
