About this deal

Unfortunately, "The Survivor", despite having a great premise, is a straight-forward thriller that offers to the reader nothing. Not even good entertainment. Still, I found this to be an absorbing read that I purposely read when I was in the right mood for it. After previously reading a couple of excellent books by this author I have been planning to read more of his work for sometime. So when I had 'The Survivor' recommended to me I decided to finally read another book by Gregg Hurwitz. Okay pondering about air disasters as a horror vehicle (no pun intended) aside the story rips along at a reasonable pace and you can see why it was itself optioned for a film (which I only got to see some years later and which does not really reflect the book at all, more stole the good points and ran off before the rest of the story could catch up).

The Survivors is an intelligent and gripping novel, my third so far by Jane Harper. Much recommended!

Nate becomes an overnight hero. He has one wound and after returning from the hospital, the surviving gunman and three other men are waiting in his apartment. The leader is a man named Pavel and Nate is told that he must retrieve something in a safe deposit box at the bank or Nate's daughter will be made to suffer in ways that Nate couldn't forsee.Jane Harper has a wonderful ability to paint the scene so vividly that the seaside location is suffused with sights and sounds, the wind and smell of the sea, the uneasiness walking across the beach at night, and the looming threat of being stranded in the caves as the tide comes in. This is a strong characteristic of Harper’s writing and the cliché of being transported to a place seems so much more real at her hand. Now, Kieran, his wife Mia, and their newborn Audrey have returned to Evelyn Bay to care for his ailing father Brian when tragedy strikes yet again after a woman’s body is washed up on the beach. A five star chiller from the master of the genre James Herbert. After a plane crash, the angry ghosts of the passagers haunt the nearby town. The only survivor of the crash might be the only one, who can put then to rest. Scary, creepy and in the end, surprisingly touching. Certainly not her best work, and a little disappointing when I enjoyed her last one so much. But, as mentioned, maybe I've just become a little jaded with the crime novel formula.
