Ongoing Covid restrictions, reduced air and freight capacity, high volumes and winter weather conditions are all impacting transportation and local delivery across the globe. The moon is full, and Caroline follows Priscilla to a cemetery on the city outskirts. In the mystic atmosphere, they await the arrival of the Baroness...Late 16th century London was one of the literary peaks in the capital's history; an era which saw Shakespeare and many of the greatest English Renaissance writers at the height of their fame and accomplishment. But some of these authors were said to have an additional form of connection than just their profession. Many notable figures, including Christopher Marlowe and Walter Raleigh, were rumoured to be members of The School of Night, an underground society whose work allegedly included explorations of alchemy, as well as the discussion of atheism. At the time, the expression of atheist beliefs was not only illegal; people were burned at the stake for it. She encounters a bizarre person in the church in Saint George. Historical crime fiction then? Yes and no. In one sense, almost all my novels start in the present because that’s where I find my themes. I started thinking about this book when the newspapers were full of the unsavoury exploits of Harvey Weinstein and Jeffrey Epstein. History rarely repeats itself but it’s certainly a place of familiar echoes. One of them is the ruthlessness which men bring to the pursuit of power. Another is their desire to possess beautiful young women, and to do so on their own terms. Occasionally society holds such men to account but usually the customary rules of decent behaviour do not apply.

The situation is dire, and using herself as bait, Caroline enters the woods alone, trying to shake off the enemy. And that jarred me – is this the root of my whole problem with this series? I do not associate I with Marwood. In the book, I think of I as Cat. I am a woman. So the question comes, is Andrew Taylor actually writing for male readers? And then.. the same thing would happen when switching from events involving Cat to events involving Marwood, although after a couple of paragraphs, I realised that we were now in first person, whereas Cat is in third. In fact, I is always Marwood.
