About this deal

I would gladly pay for a book offering a collection of the illustrator's charming work, but the story, not so much. This whimsical novel will have many a reader at the title. It begins with the death of Rintaro Natsuki’s grandfather and guardian. Rintaro is still at high school and not only does the old man’s passing leave him alone, it also imperils the future of Natsuki Books, the second-hand bookshop of every bibliophile’s dreams. Things look desperate until a talking tabby named Tiger pitches up and asks for Rintaro’s help. Their mission? To rescue books from owners who mistreat them. Enchanting adventures ensue, yielding some cosy takeaway lessons. From the #1 bestselling author in Japan comes a celebration of books, cats, and the people who love them, infused with the heartwarming spirit of The Guest Cat and The Travelling Cat Chronicles. Bookish high school student Rintaro Natsuki is about to close the secondhand bookstore he inherited from his beloved bookworm grandfather. Then, a talking cat named Tiger appears with an unusual request. The feline asks for—or rather, demands—the teenager’s help in saving books with him. The world is full of lonely books left unread and unloved, and Tiger and Rintaro must liberate them from their neglectful owners.

A book that sits on a shelf is nothing but a bundle of paper. Unless it is opened, a book possessing great power or an epic story, is a mere scrap of paper. But a book that has been cherished and loved, filled with human thoughts, has been endowed with a soul." There’s a big difference between the books you value and the ones that the rest of the society wants. I think the power of books is that - that they teach us to care about others. It's a power that gives people courage and also supports them in turn. [. . .] Empathy - that's the power of books.”

Need Help?

Books can give us knowledge, wisdom, values, a view of the world, and so much more. The joy of learning something you didn’t know before, and seeing things in a whole new way is exciting. But somehow I believed they gave us something more important than that.” Even if you try to destroy a book, it doesn’t disappear that easily. Right now, in places all over the world, people have connections to books.” It’s not true that the more you read, the more you see of the world. No matter how much knowledge you cram into your head, unless you think with your own mind, walk with your own feet, the knowledge you acquire will never be anything more than empty and borrowed.” It is also a heart-warming story. Don’t be surprised if you end up shedding a tear or two when Rintaro shares his love for books. This love stems from his late Grandfather who owns a bookstore called Natsuki Books.

It reads like a middle-grade novel, in which the lessons to be learned are crystal clear, even though Rintaro is a teenager, as is his co-adventurer, a girl named Sayo. In the U.S., the age of the characters would make this a YA novel, and there would be more nuance. But this is a Japanese novel. So just as we roll with a snarky talking cat, we roll with different publishing expectations. Scholars who at bottom do little nowadays but thumb books ultimately lose entirely their capacity to think for themselves. When they don’t thumb, they don’t think.” The Cat Who Saved Books is a heartwarming story about finding courage, caring for others – and the tremendous power of books. Books are an excellent tool, but without experiencing life as well as books, we just become ‘ an old encyclopaedia, his head stuffed with out-of-date information,’ wasting away on the shelf of our own lives without the lessons being of use to anyone.

There were not many characters to focus on and this made it was easier to follow the story and assess the character growth of each character.
