The Bone Spindle by Leslie Vedder | Waterstones

Can they save the prince or will the Witch Hunters stop them before they do? Who is Red and why does she warn Shane to stay away from her? And what will happen if they can wake Briar, how do they save him from a witch so powerful that no one has been able to stop her yet? She’s going to need a partner. A warrior huntswoman with an axe to grind (literally), Shane couldn’t care less about curses and ancient texts. But instead of riches, the two girls find trouble. Confined to a tower with the monstrous Briar Rose, Fi is caught in the Spindle Witch’s ever-tightening web. With the Spindle Witch on the verge of finding the Siphoning Spells and crushing Andar—with Fi’s help, no less—Fi’s only hope lies in decoding the ancient riddle of the Rose Witches before she loses Briar forever. The book starts with Shane offering Fi a piece of the latest treasure she wants to chase. It’s in an old ruin that is bound to have magic and traps which need navigating and she can use Fi’s help. Shane is desperate to save Andar—and her partner. She’s on the hunt for a weapon left by the mysterious Lord of the Butterflies, which holds the key to the Spindle Witch’s demise. Her love for Red has only fortified. But Red’s betrayal puts her in danger from a new enemy—the Spindle Witch’s executioner, the Wraith, a witch as powerful as he is cruel.Traditional, fairy-tale gender roles are reversed, so the sleeping beauty is male and his rescuers are female. All characters read as White, though there are a few brief mentions of tan or darker skin. Shane has always been attracted to women and falls in love with one in this story. Same-sex and bisexual attraction and relationships are standard in this fantasy world. Fi, interested in finding any old books that can help her with her current predicament, agrees to go with.

Get started Close The activation of this curse also attracts the attention of a ruthless cult called the Witch Hunters who see the blast of light and start to hunt down the magic users responsible. In a time of typewriters and steam engines, Iris Winnow awaits word from her older brother, who has enlisted on the side of Enva the Skyward goddess. Alcohol abuse led to her mother’s losing her job, and Iris has dropped out of school and found work utilizing her writing skills at the Oath Gazette. Hiding the stress of her home issues behind a brave face, Iris competes for valuable assignments that may one day earn her the coveted columnist position. Her rival for the job is handsome and wealthy Roman Kitt, whose prose entrances her so much she avoids reading his articles. At home, she writes cathartic letters to her brother, never posting them but instead placing them in her wardrobe, where they vanish overnight. One day Iris receives a reply, which, along with other events, pushes her to make dramatic life decisions. Magic plays a quiet role in this story, and readers may for a time forget there is anything supernatural going on. This is more of a wartime tale of broken families, inspired youths, and higher powers using people as pawns. It flirts with clichéd tropes but also takes some startling turns. Main characters are assumed White; same-sex marriages and gender equality at the warfront appear to be the norm in this world. All hopes of restoring Andar rest on deciphering a mysterious book code, finding the hidden city of the last Witches, and uncovering a secret lost for centuries—one that just might hold the key to the Spindle Witch’s defeat. If they can all survive that long… The fate of a cursed kingdom rests on ancient secrets, broken promises, and fierce friendships in this gasp-worthy final book of the bestselling twisted fairytale Bone Spindle series. The future of Andar lies in the secrets of its past. Fi and Shane must take on the greatest lost ruin of them all—the Tomb of Queen Aurora. The lesbian storyline was a mid sized part of this book but the oodles of chemistry between Red and Shane made up for that and I may have spent way too much time rereading those sections while “looking for quotes for this review.” The Conclusion Common Sense is the nation's leading nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the lives of all kids and families by providing the trustworthy information, education, and independent voice they need to thrive in the 21st century.
