Using the definition, focal lenght is "For an optical system in air, the distance over which initially collimated (parallel) rays are brought to a focus". That can be translated as field of view. Aperture on other hand, is "the opening of a lens's diaphragm through which light passes. It is calibrated in f/stops and is generally written as numbers such as 1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11 and 16. The lower f/stops give more exposure because they represent the larger apertures. This can be translated as the lens' light gathering capabilities. The 16mm F1.4 lens gives you an equivalent of 24mm with a DX camera, such as the Nikon Z30, Nikon Z50 or Nikon Zfc. This is a good “standard” walkaround length for typical subjects such as landscape and even street photography work. It’s significantly wider than the closest Nikon DX lens prime lens, which is the Nikkor Z DX 24mm f/1.7 lens, which gives an equivalent focal length of 36mm.

I don’t consider this lens a top choice for astro, but I made a few images with it that night that I like a lot, so won’t hesitate to use it in that fashion in the future. Carrying on from the more mass-market standard and telephoto EF-M zoom lenses, this is the obvious choice for anybody wanting an ultra-wide viewing angle. Wide-angle zooms can be notoriously big and heavy, but this one has the same kind of retractable design as the EF-M 15-45mm lens, shoehorning seriously wide viewing into physical dimensions of just 61x58mm. The long-zoom aperture of f/5.6 is slightly wider than in the standard and telephoto zooms, and this lens also goes one better in terms of build quality, with a metal rather than plastic mounting plate. Between Sigma’s positive reputation for longevity (seriously, my 30mm F1.4 has survived some nasty stuff) along with the full weather sealing, I have no doubt that this lens should endure and survive for years to come. On a slightly unrelated note, the Sigma 16mm F1.4 has also gotten some love from the astrophotography community. I personally love manual lenses, but I know most people prefer the convenience and reliability of autofocus, so it definitely serves a limited market. Agreed 100%. This alone shows (proves?) already-excellent lens collection in m43 system. An excellent lens like this Sigma has hard time to justify (except from f1.4 aperture). If you look through a tube at an angle, similar to the light reaching the frame's corner, the shape is not round.

Verdict:

There’s a lot to be said for ‘superzoom’ lenses for travel and walkabout photography. The main advantage is that the epic zoom range, stretching all the way from wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths, enables you to react to pretty much any shooting scenario with just a twist of the zoom ring, rather than having to carry multiple lenses and swap between them.
