The disc presents a native 3840 x 2160p resolution image in the film's original theatrical aspect ratio of widescreen 2.4:1. It uses 10-bit video depth, a Wider Colour Gamut (WCG) and High Dynamic Range (HDR), as well as Dolby Vision, and is encoded using the HEVC (H.265) codec. image soars. Intimate skin details, clothes, environments, everything is ultra-sharp and finely revealing. Basic superlatives don't really do it justice; The colour scheme is problematic for a number of reasons, with the film looking darker than it was theatrically and thus making Dolby Vision work overtime to pull the shadow detail to the fore. This mostly works, but it's still not quite perfect - when it really should be - and even the peak whites struggle in some of the scenes to avoid being fully overblown. Grain gives the feature a suitably filmic texture, but also won't please viewers who like their features to look very glossy and 'clean'. And, unfortunately, also doesn't quite marry up during the IMAX scenes, which are flawless. Detail laps up the weathered prison setting for the opening sequence, Cruise's ageing but still phenomenal physique, strands of hair and fine precision details on facial close-ups. The high-tech railway car, the underwater escape, and the entire Dubai sequence - not least the scaling of the Burj which is amidst one of the most spectacular-looking scenes ever to grace the format - it's all fantastic material which the 4K rendition delivers with skill.

Native film grain is slightly less aggressive when it comes to M:I-2 (2000) and while colours are still not perfect, they're less often overblown. Director John Woo's stylised photography provides even more opportunities to ramp up the dynamic range – although there is occasional ringing around heavily contrasted objects. But whereas the Furious entries can function as standalone popcorn actioners hellbent at marveling moviegoers with insane vehicular mayhem, the Impossiblefranchise is a smartly-crafted interconnected series that grows and advances with its central hero, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise). While also astounding audiences with plenty of stunning visual spectacle and astonishing feats of daredevilry, every new sequel expands on the character's mythos, showing that he and his allies live in a larger universe that affects his personality and decisions. Action sequences are a direct result of his choices, the outcome of a decisiveness that has potentially been influenced by the events of the movies which have preceded it. And it's with this in mind that makes the Mission: Impossible series so entertaining, watching a talented, astute and otherwise sensible individual afflicted by years of sacrifice, conscious of the impact his choices have had on his personal life, as well as the world around him.
