About this deal

Meanwhile, in present day, Mrs Threadgoode urges Evelyn to live her life to the fullest. Just because she has entered middle age does not mean that her life is over. Written during the 1980s era of the working woman, Evelyn is coached on to get a new lease on life, a new career, and enjoy the second half of her time on this earth. In an interview following the novel, Fannie Flagg points out that she prefers older characters because they have many layers to their lives and much advice to offer to younger generations. It is in this mind set that she made Mrs Threadgoode the central point of her novel. Rippier Wheeler, Helen (1997). Women & aging. Lynne Rienner Publishers. p. 196. ISBN 1-55587-661-7. Due to the building of a major highway Whistle Stop has ended up a deserted ghost town. But the memories for those who lived and worked there remain. But sometimes chance meetings and relationships formed have far reaching consequences.

I love how she gives the reader a look at a particular situation from various angles: through time, through other eyes, so that you get a complete picture of how things play out. I just loved getting to see how Buddy's life turned out and to get caught up with the other characters from the first book. Fried Green Tomatoes felt like the answer to a wish. I saw it four times in the theater, something I haven’t done since. My girlfriend at the time got freaked out about my love of it — so was I, frankly! I was 22, and had been out since my first year of college. I was embarking on my post-college life, which felt full of possibility. Yet even in my happy state, Fried Green Tomatoes made me feel a yearning that I had never felt before.Fried Green Tomatoes received two Oscar nominations for Best Supporting Actress and Best Adapted Screenplay. It received two BAFTA nominations, including Best Actress in a Leading Role, and garnered three Golden Globe nominations, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The film was also nominated for the Guldbagge Award for Best Foreign Film. We never learn where Ninny came from or how she came to be adopted by the Threadgoodes, only that they took her in and treated her like a member of the family. This is only one example in a novel full of non-traditional families. What are some other examples of familial bonds that do not look like a traditional nuclear family? How does this author challenge and expand our understanding of the meaning and structure of family?

What was this power, this insidious threat, this invisible gun to her head that controlled her life . . . this terror of being called names? When she woke this morning, Evelyn realised that she was actually looking forward to going to the nursing home. Sitting there all these weeks listening to stories about the café and Whistle Stop had become more of a reality than her own life….. I can't wait to see what else we learn! Maybe Smokey the hobo was actually a millionaire, Ruth never died, and Sipsey owned the town (okay that last one would be awesome). Stops are made along the way, and you see the town’s demise as the years pass, as people pass. Through Dot’s newsletters you find out that Idgie Threadgoode closed down the Whistle Stop Café in the mid-60’s, and ‘retires’ to Florida near her brother Julian, Buddy marries, becomes a veterinarian, becomes a father, and then and eventually a grandfather. Meanwhile, Whistle Stop slowly becomes a town forgotten by the world, but remembered by the few who lived, and loved, their lives there. What did Ninny Threadgoode’s stories offer Evelyn? Why do you think Evelyn is so drawn to this woman and her stories?
