Carmellose sodium eye drops are also known as 'artificial tears'. They are used to relieve eye dryness and soreness. They moisten, soothe and lubricate the surface of your eye, making it feel more comfortable. These all moisturise the eye and have a similar effect to carmellose sodium. You could also try a lubricating eye gel or eye ointment.

6. Pregnancy and breastfeeding

Do not re-use the single-dose container even if there is some solution left. It is most important that you throw it away and do not keep it.

Hold the bottle or dropper over your eye, look up, and allow 1 drop to fall into your lower eyelid.Most adults and children can use carmellose sodium eye drops, although it may not be suitable for everyone. This medicine is available without prescription from pharmacies. Always use this medicine exactly as described in this leaflet or as your pharmacist or nurse has told you. Due to the high molecular weight (approx. 90,000 Daltons) carmellose sodium is unlikely to penetrate the cornea. If you forget to use your eye drops, use them when you need them next or when it’s time for your next dose. What if I use too much? The other ingredients are sodium chloride, sodium lactate, potassium chloride, calcium chloride and purified water.

Ensure that the single-dose container is intact before use. The eye drop solution should be used immediately after opening. Carmellose sodium eye drops can be stored at room temperature and do not need to be kept in a fridge. What if I forget to use it? If your child experiences symptoms that you think might be due to the drops, speak to your pharmacist or doctor. Speak to a pharmacist or your doctor if you've been using carmellose sodium regularly and there's been no improvement after 4 to 6 weeks. They may recommend that you try different eye drops, an eye gel or ointment. See your doctor if you still have dry eyes after trying different medicines.

The usual dose for adults and children is 1 drop into the affected eye(s), 4 times a day, or as needed. Eye drops: You only need to place one drop in each eye. If you need to give more than one type of eye drop, leave at least five minutes between applying each type of medicine. At the time of writing there is limited published experience regarding the safety of carmellose sodium in breastfeeding, however, carmellose sodium eye drops have been used for many years with no adverse effects reported and the manufacturer states no special precautions are necessary during breastfeeding. Carmellose has a high molecular weight and would be unlikely to be present in breastmilk. Schaefer considers that most eye drops are compatible with breastfeeding and that artificial tears are not amongst those ophthalmic preparations likely to raise concern (Schaefer 2007).
