And, as long as nuclear weapons remain a reality, Threads will never lose any of its explosive power. Agreed. My partner and I are both in our 50s. I watched as a kid the first time round, she had never seen it. When I found out my local video store had a copy of this film, I rushed to get it, as I was impatient to see this movie I have heard so much about. The impatience to see the movie was rewarded by nothing more than a really bad aftertaste of radioactive fallout.

Threads' was looked on as left-wing anti-nuclear propaganda in the mid-80's during the height of Thatcherism,yet was still broadcast by the BBC even though said Mrs T always clearly had a downer on the organisation. These opening exchanges are indebted to the British kitchen sink realism of the 1960s, best popularised on film by the director Ken Loach. Indeed, Threads was written by Barry Hines, who adapted one of his own novels into the script for Loach’s 1969 masterpiece Kes. Unfortunately, Threads is not a film that feels of its time either. It’s more relevant than ever. With the threat of nuclear war still present in our lives, it’s likely to never feel out of touch or old-fashioned. I personally consider it to be one of the most affecting films I’ve ever seen, the kind that will linger with you for days afterwards. Dirty, cold, homeless and hungry, Ruth finds herself on the moors where a dead sheep is the only available source of sustenance. Despite appearing to offer some brief salvation and the chance to satisfy her aching stomach, Ruth knows, deep down, that the sheep has died from radiation poisoning and munching down on it is only going to cause her severe health problems in the future. Such is her predicament, though, there's no point planning for an uncertain future and she has to force down the raw, contaminated meat. Our intention in making Threads was to step aside from the politics and – I hope convincingly – show the actual effects on either side should our best endeavours to prevent nuclear war fail.
