THE OFFICE BFFS | Kirkus Reviews

I don’t listen to their podcast, Office Ladies, because I just do not have that attention span but now I really want to. The behind the scenes information and facts were so entertaining to read and even the second to last chapter made me tear up. Like what? 😅🥲 It really felt like they were chatting to me through the book. The following conversation is excerpted from The Office BFFs: Tales of The Office from Two Best Friends Who Were There by Jenna Fischer (who played Pam Beasley) and Angela Kinsey (who played Angela Martin). We’re not the experts on The Office, you are! If there’s anything we missed, or if you have any burning questions you wanted answered about upcoming episodes, please send them to [email protected] with the episode title in the subject line. Fischer and Kinsey, co-hosts of the Office Ladies podcast, are engaging storytellers, and their often hilarious escapades as best friends make this joint tale fascinating for even the most casual fan of The Office. The chapter about the “Death Bus” episode (directed by Bryan Cranston), which nearly killed the entire cast, is laugh-out-loud funny, and Kinsey sums it up appropriately: “Pie mends all things, including near carbon monoxide poisoning.” Mostly employing a dialogue format, the authors walk the line between a behind-the-scenes look at the landmark comedy and the desire to maintain the secrets they share with their friends. (That said, many readers would love to hear the R-rated “master class in 1980s Hollywood gossip” that the authors learned from James Spader.) For hardcore Office fans, Fischer provides personal insight into some of her—and the show’s—most important scenes, including her wedding and what she said to Steve Carell in their final scene together before he left the show. Kinsey discusses the fascinating mechanics of hiding her pregnancy on screen and how she and Rainn Wilson (Dwight Schrute) navigated their first make-out scene. In addition to numerous insider insights about the creation and filming of the episodes, Fischer and Kinsey reveal much more about their friendship, their decision to launch their podcast—and a media company—together, as well as the struggles of being working mothers. Fischer writes about how she had to return to the show much faster than she wanted to after the birth of her son because, “in our business, there is no paid maternity leave.” Ultimately, the authors manage to make everyone feel like they are also one of their BFFs.

Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey on The Office BFFs book

The selling point for me was the collection of pictures that accompany these stories (putting faces with names). Be warned, however, the pictures (at least in the Kindle version of the book) are all credited (“Courtesy of Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey” over and over) but NONE of them are captioned. You have to make assumptions about who is in the photo and when/why, etc. Doing this a few times seems fine but doing this hundreds of times is not fun. It was tedious. I’m familiar with the Who’s Who of actors, writers, sometimes directors but I don’t know which guy is the boom operator or the props creator. It would be so nice to have a caption that reads something like “Pictured left to right: John Doe, Joe Schmoe on the first day of filming!”. Did you know you can flag iffy content? B.J. Novak (Ryan) and Mindy Kaling (Kelly) were writers and actors on the show. Paul Lieberstein, (Toby in HR) was a writer without any acting experience and no desire to be an actor. He was written into the show and continued to be included in the show because his deadpan face worked well with Steve Carell's (Michael Scott's) antics. My wife and I absolutely love this show. We were scrolling through Netflix and stumbled across it, at first we were like "How can you make a 9 season show about an office" but we decided to watch the first episode. We literally ended up watching all 9 seasons in under 4 weeks. We loved it so much we have started to call each other Jim and Pam. If you are bored and can't find a show this is your answer.
