But this notion of the biologically hard-wired criminal was one view among many. To be sure, it was deeply influential, particularly within the emergent discourse of eugenics. But it also vied with other ideas.

The History of the Behavioral Sciences. 2019;56(1):7-19. doi:10.1002/jhbs.21994 The first publication in the United States in support of phrenology was published by Dr. John Bell, who reissued Combe's essays with an introductory discourse, in 1822. [76] The following year, Dr. John G. Wells of Bowdoin College "commenced an annual exposition, and recommendation of its doctrines, to his class". [76] In 1834, Dr. John D. Godman, professor of anatomy at Rutgers Medical College, emphatically defended phrenology when he wrote: [77] Manual of Phrenology. (Lorenzo Niles) (1811–1896) Racial craniology persisted through the 1940s and was a major feature of Nazi Germany’s race science. 39 After the war, the race concept, and the science that studied it, was widely rejected. The “New Physical Anthropology” suggested the replacement of old typological, narrow classifications of race with a more fluid, evolving Darwinian concept of “population.” 40 While this shift largely ended older craniological studies, many of the measures, methods, and standards developed in the century of craniology's major expansion, from the early 19 th to the early 20 th century, persisted in studies of paleoanthropology, forensic anthropology, human variation, and medicine. 41 The racial classifications and link between brain size and intelligence supposed by Morton and fellow 19 th century craniologists, as well as the link between broad cranial classifications (e.g. “savage round-heads” and “gentle long heads”) have been thoroughly discarded. Even so, many of the techniques, ideas, and even collections of human remains which were at the core of craniology persist into the present. Thompson, Courtney E. (2021). It is, however, allowable to take as a principle, that there will be a relation betwixt vigour of intellect and perfection of form; and that, therefore, history will direct us to the original and chief family of mankind. We therefore ask, which are the nations that have excelled and figured in history, not only as conquerors, but as forwarding, by their improvements in arts and sciences, the progress of human knowledge? a b Combe, George (1839). Retrieved 2020-11-19– via Google Books.Phrenological societies began to appear in London and other cities by the 1820s and were discussed in many medical societies (Greenblatt, 1995). Long before neuroscience, phrenology claimed to have the power to determine who was afflicted with badness and who was suffering from madness. Phrenology is the study of personality traits, talents, and mental abilities as a consequence of skull curvature. Another important implication of Gall’s localization theory was an understanding of the difference between white and gray matter. Gall believed that if someone’s mental faculties are located in the gray matter on the brain’s surface, then the white matter must serve to interconnect regions associated with particular brain functions to the cortex and lower centers.

Believing that an individual’s faculties could be modified over the course of a lifetime, Spurzheim modified the strict deterministic view of people and introduced the potential for treatment and change. These traits, however, were still heritable (Morin, 2014). Applications Phrenology in 19th century Britain Later, Spurzheim would modify Gall’s theories by eliminating all faculties that were inherently evil, such as the faculty of murder and carnivorousness. Saul Mcleod, Ph.D., is a qualified psychology teacher with over 18 years experience of working in further and higher education. He has been published in peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Clinical Psychology. It was for this reason that Lombroso made tattoos a dominant symptom of the pathological criminal (the striking illustrations in L’Uomo Delinquente are an abundant resource for the historian of tattooing). Only a person with a degenerated brain and nervous system would be able to subject him or herself to the pain of the tattooist’s needle! Then, comparing these statistics on curvature against lifestyle measures acquired from the same group of people, making an attempt to match a subset of lifestyle measures to phrenological ideas of brain organization. As a result, Gall and Johann Gaspar Spurzheim, a student of Gall, moved to Paris, where Spurzheim systematized and extended Gall’s system.
