About this deal

The biggest and most irritating issue I have with 512GW with rear cam is the need to switch off and switch on to cure a fault (this is Nextbase own advice).

The neodymium magnetic attachment is exceptionally strong, too, so your dash cam should never detach from the windscreen and none of the footage we captured is shaky. The magnetic mount attachment also makes clipping the dash cam onto the mount much less fiddly than before. Red (!): this is for a customer to press when they have witnessed something they want to be protected. Of course, unlike Thinkware and similar designs, the 512GW has a screen so you don’t have to resort to an app to change settings and review footage.

This was the procedure I used. Its basically the same principle as the youtube video mentioned earlier in this thread for an earlier model. Remove the 4 small cross-head screws from the corners of the circuit board (keep separately from the above screws, they are different.)

There’s also an auto-dimming feature which lowers the screen brightness at night (or in low light) and another new one: time-lapse. You should only use this for special trips, not normal driving, and there’s a choice of either three minutes or two hours, with a three-minute duration creating a 30 second video. The 512GW is a mid-range dash cam from Nextbase, a company originally set up in 1999 to import portable entertainment systems from China. Since then, Nextbase has developed quite a large range of dash cams, so it’s a surprise that this is our first experience of the brand in this area – although we have come across the company’s other products, for example with the Walking Cinema Portable DVD Player. Navigating through the various settings menus is simple since everything on-screen is clearly labelled. There are plenty of things to adjust, including settings for the frame rate and resolution, as well as switching audio recording on and off or setting a number plate for the camera car. basically YES. If the rear camera is not plugged in at power on, then none of this happens ie no PiP appearance at all - and this is as it should be. I've fixed mobile phones and gopro cameras before so I have some skill in this area but I don't want to attempt the impossible.

If the Dash Cam does not appear as a drive on your PC, please press the reset button on the underside of your Dash Cam and try all the USB ports on your computer. When it detects the rear camera is plugged in at power on then it asks where you would like the PiP to appear which is ok, but then it enters fault mode in displaying a yellow PiP frame with no content. Power off/on is then required before the unit puts content in the frame - this is clearly a bug. It is a software fault when all that is required to cure it is to restart the software. Ok - off/on is all that's needed but the unit takes 3 to 4 seconds to go into power down mode and another 3 to 4 seconds to power up and perform as expected. The rear of the 512GW is dominated by a 3-inch LCD screen with touch-sensitive buttons on either end. There’s a clearly marked menu button, which loads the video settings. You can change the resolution, but also vary the exposure between +2 and -2 in five steps. Given that the battery does seem to sometimes fail prematurely, maybe the next range of cameras can have a user replaceable battery, or maybe just a capacitor across the range, whenever they may be. The Hi and Lo resolution files improve the speed of the Wi-Fi transfer, if you do not ever use this feature we're working on a setting to turn this off.

Nextbase How to format the SD card in your Dash Cam - Nextbase

The 512GW does have a compatible rear camera; the 512GWRC. However this is no longer produced or sold. There’s more: with the rear camera attached, you can’t opt to record high- and low-quality clips simultaneously as you can without it. Instead you’ll find front and rear clips on the microSD card. Parking mode If you upgrade to a Series 2 Camera, there are 3 different Series 2 Rear Cameras that are all compatible with the 322GW, 422GW, 522GW and 622GW. Unfortunately the Series 2 Rear Cameras will not work with any other devices apart from the ones I have listed above. These Rear Cams do not require separate powering or SD cards. Then the Dash Cam will be visible as a removable drive on your computer. If you go into My Computer (Windows) or Finder (Mac) you will be able to see the Dash Cam listed as a drive, usually called NEXTBASE.Unplug the power cable, turn the Dash Cam on and time how long the Dash Cam stays on for. The time it takes for the battery to drain will help us identify the root cause The Nextbase may not offer a great many extra features, but it does deliver in the most important area: image quality. The healthy data rate and Full HD resolution provide footage that’s faithful in colour and relatively devoid of artefacts. It’s more than up to the job of providing a useful view of the road ahead in case you need video evidence of an incident. The dash cam itself is smaller and more discreet than the 512GW, too, 35% smaller in fact. The adhesive mount is much smaller than the suction one though, so that's something to bear in mind if you're conscious of how much space the dash cam will take up on your windscreen. You can enter your number plate so that this can be stamped on the video frame. Other additional information that can be added are time and date, speed, GPS location, and the model number of the dash cam. These are all displayed along the bottom of the frame.
