The National Institutes of Health was the university for Diaz and Bark. They spent a year doing their investigations aided by specialists in the various Institutes. Dmitry Kaminskiy is an innovative entrepreneur, investor, author and philanthropist dedicated to impact investment and ethical business, with a focus on engineering the accelerated trajectory of progressive technological development for the benefit of humanity. The book begins by delving into the biology of aging, exploring how the aging processes affect our bodies and examining the cellular mechanisms that contribute to aging. Dr. Barzilai outlines the roles of genetics and epigenetics in aging, discussing how some individuals are predisposed to live exceptionally long lives due to specific genetic factors. He introduces the concept of longevity genes, which are genetic variations that help protect against age-related diseases and promote overall health. A]geing is the biggest single risk factor for chronic illnesses like cardiovascular disease, cancer, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and neurodegeneration (including Alzheimer's)." (p. 38)

The challenge of treating disease with adult stem cells is that adults have few stems cells in our tissues, and even once those have been harvested and isolated in the lab, growing them isn't easy. I like the way Cameron Diaz writes these scientific books in an approachable way. I also really enjoyed the little vignettes about her life and how she's put into practice what she has learned. Many of the pharmaceutical studies we rely on do not take sex into consideration. Since hormones fluctuate over the course of a month, tests that use females can be a lot more complicated to analyze than tests that use males. Without taking hormonal shifts into account, it is impossible to determine how treatments might affect a woman over the course of a month." (pp. 55 - 56)

Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever by Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman: Futurist Ray Kurzweil, more so than anyone but probably Aubrey de Grey, has been instrumental in bringing longevity research out of the shadows and into the popularity it enjoys today. This book, though outdated now (written in 2004) is still a great application of exponential thinking to life extension. As our cells continually divide and copy their genetic information, the risk of imperfect copying increases. More cellular divisions with age provide more opportunities for errors to occur. Those errors can result in mutations that allow cancerous cells to develop and flourish." (p 101) Dr. Barzilai’s work with centenarians, people who have reached the age of 100, forms a significant part of the book. Through his research, he has identified common traits among centenarians, including specific genetic markers, lifestyle factors, and environmental influences that contribute to their exceptional longevity. These findings offer valuable insights into the factors that could help us live longer, healthier lives. Interventions and pharmacologyWhen we are young...our entire skeleton is replaced about every ten years, with osteoclast cells reabsorbing old bone and osteoblast cells forming new bone. However, as we age, the number of osteoclast cells increases and bone breakdown subsequently overtakes bone build-up, which causes a gradual loss of bone mass." (p 104) Did YOU know that high doses of [melatonin/vitamin D/magnesium/vitamin C/insert the author’s favorite supplement of choice] acts as a miracle anti-aging drug and can also cure baldness and work as birth control?!” Because that’s what we did, and we also went ahead and compiled our findings of the best anti-aging books into the list below for your convenience. Yes: I skimmed only the sections of The Longevity Book that interested me. What I read was impressive in its own way. So if you want to age well, consider what makes you feel most alive. Consider what fills you with love and anticipation and wonder and joy - and then go and do some more of that, please." (p 204) Lovely, lovely book! Very informative and educational. It's an essential reading for every girl and woman out there!
