About this deal

But what was it like to be on the side of the judging panel? ‘I thought it would be really hard because I have empathy for anyone that throws themselves open to judging. But when that camera rolls and then you see someone’s house, you have a visceral reaction, good or bad and there’s no hiding that! If I tried to lie, I’m wearing it on my face anyway. It’s a very lovely show, and all the houses are quite beautiful. But I’m not afraid to give my opinion on it.’ Sustaining local craft

About Banjo Beale

I love India. Every time I visit, I collect more [bhars]. I love seeing my collection in my home because I know that I've had chai on a street in India out of every one of those cups. What would we find in your bedside table? In this warm and characterful new series, Banjo and his friendly team of tradespeople travel across the Scottish islands using their craft skills, energy and creativity to bring Banjo’s Hebridean design dreams to life. Designing the Hebrides will air on BBC Scotland, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer later in 2023. Also on the agenda for the interiors pro is his book, Wild Isle Style: Resourceful, Original and Inventive Design Ideas, which is due out in October. And Banjo has a project in the pipeline for another Scottish star. We knew that we had to follow Banjo on his next adventure when he told us that he wanted to start his interior design business on the Isle of Mull,” says Donna Clark, Executive Producer and DSP MD. Filming with Banjo in such breathtakingly beautiful locales and showcasing his unique creative work has been a true delight. An Antipodean Hebridean, Brendan ''Banjo'' Beale grew up in central west Australia in the middle of nowhere.

The tiny home, which features on the latest episode of Designing the Hebrides on BBC Scotland, had no power or running hot water, and was damp and rotting. It’s an accessible roadmap to creating authentic and sustainable design that doesn’t cost the earth. I turned cowbells into light pendants at a farm because they had no money. Also, some of the spaces are inaccessible, I had to take a boat, full of stuff out to a lighthouse we were designing, and I had to walk two hours to one space. On an island logistics are a big part of it. BB: Oh, yes I am. I absolutely love plants – I have far too many. And then I continue to buy too many. But plants are like friends, you can never have too many. Did I just say that? Ha ha. Having won both Interior Design Masters 2022 and the hearts of the British public, Banjo Beale is fronting a new TV show, Designing the Hebrides. It offers the viewer an insight into his life in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, Scotland. Good Homes sits down with the loveliest man in interiors for a chat about the six-episode series, airing from 12 April 2023 on BBC Scotland, BBC Two and BBC iPlayer… Island life

Book festival inspires words of praise - The Oban Times

BBC/Darlow Smithson Productions Doing two storeys of a Soho bar – some challenge! How did you even start to come up with an idea for a scheme? The weather is unpredictable, the locals are straight talking, the budgets are lean and you can’t just run to the shops to buy supplies - you have to be resourceful!”

BBC Designing The Hebrides - Media Centre - BBC

Designing The Hebrides is a DSP production (a Banijay UK company) commissioned by Steve Allen for BBC Scotland and Catherine Catton, Head of Commissioning, Factual Entertainment and Events. The Executive Producers are Donna Clark and John Featherstone. The Commissioning Editor is Clare Mottershead. Six-part series, Designing The Hebrides, will see the expert and his team of tradespeople doing up unique spaces, from a family-owned fish shop in Tobermory to a bookshop on Skye. And Banjo said his favourite part of the process was the people they encountered. BBC/Darlow Smithson Productions Out of all the schemes you've done on the show which has been your favourite, and why?Long-time fans of this column (Anyone? Come on there must be one of you) will know that I have a peculiar aversion to wholesome TV. This is, simply, because I am quite a nasty person. You can’t say that these days, can you? We all have to try to maintain the artifice that we’re all good and moral and true. Well, I’m not. I’m horrible. So fuzzy-sided, warm-hearted television that has absolutely no scenes where someone’s head explodes very rarely does it for me. I'm kind of hoping I can find that perfect balance. Doing the winner's project, [to transform a self-catering beach retreat in Watergate Bay in Cornwall], taught me a lot. I was almost an apprentice. After turning something around in two days on the show, it was quite different to do a four-month project, with an entire production team and a hefty budget. I'm really pleased with the result – it's just a space that's Banjo, sustainable and natural and reflective of the environment. With his own interior design business on the Isle of Mull, his home with husband Ro for the last eight years, and as the frontman for the popular BBC 2 TV show Designing the Hebrides, his style has captured the hearts of many.
