About this deal

With static subjects, all three lenses deliver fast and accurate focus, and I didn’t encounter any unwelcome behaviour or particular problem during my two weeks testing them. Think Tank Lens Changer 150-600 V3.0 - store and protect this telephoto with an excellent lens case Sigma WR Ceramic Protector Filter 95mm - stronger, thinner and lighter protection for the front element MPB puts photo and video kit into more hands, more sustainably. Every month, visual storytellers sell more than 20,000 cameras and lenses to MPB. Choose used and get affordable access to kit that doesn’t cost the earth. Sigma offers both 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters for L-mount. Equipped with the TC-1411 teleconverter, the 150-600mm F5-6.3 is effectively a 210-840mm F7.1-9 lens. And with the TC-2011 teleconverter attached, it functions as a 300-1200mm F10-13. Sadly, neither teleconverter is available for E-mount shooters.

Concerning manual focus, the focus ring on the Tamron lens is not as smooth as the other two at first glance. However, after focusing manually several times for my sharpness and close-up tests, I found that it is the Sigma lens that gives you the most accurate and pleasant experience. With the Tamron and the Sony, it is a bit more difficult to nail focus precisely. I am not quite sure what you mean by "compressed macro", but sounds interesting and i would enjoy hearing you explain the term to me. We use Imatest SFR (spatial frequency response) charts and analysis software to plot lens resolution at the centre of the image frame, corners and mid-point distances, across the range of aperture settings and, with zoom lenses, at four different focal lengths. The tests also measure distortion and color fringing (chromatic aberration).

Have you ever tried to do zoomed in landscape or compressed macro photos yet with your Sigma? That can be fun, I like to zoom into mountains and catch the details. Optical image stabilisation offers around 4-stops of compensation to compensate when handholding at slower shutter speeds. An OS switch along with c ustom mode switches also allow the user to change between settings to suit different shooting situations. A focus limiter switch caters for subject distance to speed up AF performance and there are also three customisable AFL buttons. Like you, I've been testing the lens out for the past couple months. Because we both shoot primarily wildlife, I feel like the scenarios I've used it in are very similar to those that you've used your 150-600mm in. Wildlife in all sorts of conditions! And, like you, I have yet to be at all disappointed with my new Sigma f6.3 zoom. Use with teleconverters: Yes, Sigma offers two teleconverters TC-1411 and TC-2011 which multiply focal length and maximum magnification by 1.4x resp. 2x – but only for L-mount. The lens probably does not work with Sony’s 1.4x and 2x teleconverters – only the Sony 200-600 certifiably works on Sony’s teleconverters. [+]

Sure. I've used the Nikon 200-500, the Tamron 150-600, the Sigma 100-400, the Sigma 150-600C, the Sony 100-400GM, and the Sony 200-600. When shooting at the maximum aperture of f/5, you can see some slight vignetting at 150mm. It’s not hugely noticeable when shooting normal subjects, but you can see it when photographing a white wall. The effect is much more minimal when shooting at 600mm at f/6.3. Throughout the focal lengths, the problem almost completely disappears when you close down the aperture to f/11. Yet despite being bigger, heavier and more expensive, Sony's lens has relatively few advantages. It's no brighter than the Sigma, and its focal range is quite similar too. In fact it's the 150-600mm which actually has a bit of an advantage at the wider end. A lens like this will likely see most use at the tele end which is identical for both lenses, though, so it's really something of a wash. Image quality is exceptional, with ultra-high-performance glass capable of delivering ultra-sharp results even on the highest resolution cameras. The lens displays beautiful bokeh throughout its zoom range, and optical aberrations are kept well under control. It can be used with SIGMA’s 1.4× and 2× L-Mount teleconverters, with AF effective up to 1200mm. The 150-600mm F5-6.3 DG DN OS | Sports comes with the pro-level functionality that defines the SIGMA Sports line lens, which is designed for capturing fast-action subjects.

We run a range of lab tests under controlled conditions, using the Imatest Master testing suite. Photos of test charts are taken across the range of apertures and zooms (where available), then analyzed for sharpness, distortion and chromatic aberrations. The front lens element has a hydrophobic/oleophobic coating that helps resist fingerprints or rain drops from adhering. Lenses – The lens has dust inside that may affect images. The rubber zoom/focus ring is coming away from the barrel of the lens.
