William Grant & Sons owns Glenfiddich, located in the scenic Scottish burgh of Dufftown in Moray. The whisky’s name is derived from Gleann Fhiodhaich which translates to “valley of the deer”- a homage that can be seen through its iconic stag logo. Glenfiddich on the other hand was established by William Grant & Sons in Dufftown in 1886. It offers more intense flavours than Glenlivet. Its robust taste comes from its ageing process of 12-21 years which grants it an incredible depth of character that can be appreciated by whisky connoisseurs around the world. This new take saw its primary maturation in American and Sherry oak casks, before a round of finishing in first-fill Oloroso sherry, Troncais oak Cognac and Vintage Colheita port casks (this latter is a personal favorite when it comes to Port). This is bottled at 43% ABV. The two distilleries have competed against each other for centuries and continue to do so today. Both brands have immense popularity throughout the world – particularly among whisky drinkers – with new fans discovering their unique offerings every day. Throughout the Great Depression, The Glenlivet stayed open. In fact, the only period during which the distillery shut down was during World War II, by government decree, after which it played a key role in pulling Britain out of its postwar debt by exporting whisky to the United States. The American market had exploded during the new century, and the high demand even led to the British government maintaining bread rations for some time so that distillers could utilize the limited grain resources for whisky production. A pour of the 21 Year Old takes on a copper cast in the glass. The nose had a cake-like, fruity character, with a current of musty air washing over it. The flavor develops those qualities substantially, coming out as baked pears smothered in honey, touched up with vanilla, ginger and golden raisins. This fades fast on the finish, winding down first to hay before finally settling on a faint trace of oak.
