See the separate leaflet called Ageing Feet for more detail. What are the symptoms of a metatarsal fracture? Acute metatarsal fracture

Breaking the top of the foot is a common injury for many people, especially those who regularly play sport or engage in any other practice that risks impact. There are a great many bones in the foot, but the most common fracture is to one of the metatarsals, which are connected to each toe at the top of the foot. It’s usually possible to make a full recovery from a broken foot in around eight weeks, using the services of the NHS or a private physiotherapist. How Do You Know if You Have a Broken Foot? Progressive weight bearing on the foot can then follow as pain allows. Other fractures may need treatment with a below-the-knee plaster cast. Surgery st MTP joint cheilectomy– TWB for 48 hours and then WBAT in post-operative shoe for at least 6 weeksDisplaced or not displaced: a displaced fracture is one where, following the break, the bones have slipped out of line. A displaced fracture needs specialist care, as the bones will need to be properly lined up and stabilised. This may involve an anaesthetic and some kind of metal pinning or plating to the bones.

After your plaster is removed you can start taking increasing exercise. Start with walking or cycling, building up to more vigorous exercise as comfort and flexibility permit. Your foot will be stiffer after surgery and you may not be able to do all you could before. Many people find that, because the foot is more comfortable than before surgery, they can do more than they could before the operation. Most can walk a reasonable distance on the flat, slopes and stairs, drive and cycle. Walking on rough ground is more difficult after an ankle fusion because the foot is stiffer. It is rare to be able to play vigorous sports such as squash or football after an ankle fusion. On rough ground is more difficult after an ankle fusion because the foot is stiffer. What are the risks The following is a rough guide of what to expect when you come out of surgery for some common procedures (note this may change depending on individual considerations). You may walk as normal, taking the weight through the operated foot. The physiotherapist will give you instructions on the correct and safe use of your crutches if you require them after your operation. Weight bear as tolerate (WBAT)

At first, the main symptom may just be pain in the foot during exercise that is relieved by rest. The pain tends to be widespread and diffuse in the foot. Plaster casts are made up of a bandage and a hard covering, usually plaster of paris. They allow broken bones in the arm or leg to heal by holding them in place, and usually need to stay on for between 4 and 12 weeks. You may walk with as much weight as you can tolerate through the operated foot as pain and discomfort allows. Do not force yourself to walk normally if it hurts. Instructions will be given on the correct and safe use of crutches by the physiotherapist. Partial weight bearing (PWB) If you have an acute fracture and you continue to stress the bone, the pain will increase further as the broken ends of bone will start to rub slightly against one another, and the area will become inflamed. In the worst case scenario the fracture may become displaced. Do I need any investigations?
