About this deal

No, these aren't the favourite compound of the Munchkins from The Wizard of Oz, but are in fact a type of mesoionic compound. These are ring structures in which the positive and negative charge are delocalised, and which cannot be represented satisfactorily by any one polar structure. They got their name when Huisgen called them after the city Munich (München), after similar compounds were called sydnones after Sydney.

Boyer said water test results in Port Sulphur are just what he’d expect from seawater entering a water system. And according to Boyer, the parish’s temporary solution – blending in fresh river water to mix with the seawater – “is creating some very ideal conditions” for increased levels of disinfection byproducts. ‘I would not be drinking that water’ Thanks to John P Oliver, Peter Macinnis and Charles Turner for providing the info and story. Incidentally, Godnose is also the name of an Australian punk band. When sodium chloride (NaCl) is squeezed by diamond anvils at high temperatures and under Cl- or Na-rich conditions, exotic compounds such as NaCl3 can be formed. Credit: Artem R. Oganov & Weiwei Zhang This mineral is a pink (of course...) gemstone, named after the gemologist G.F. Kunz who described it in 1902. Kunzite is a fragile stone, which shows different shades of colour when viewed from different directions. Called an "evening" stone, it should not be exposed to direct sunlight which can fade its color in time. Its alternative name, Spodumene, sounds like an American shop that sells computer nerds ("Spod-U-Mean") All through the summer, residents were alarmed by the water’s condition. “At times, our water would smell like sewage,” said Catherine Vodopija, who was born and raised in lower Plaquemines. “It would bleach our clothes. It would come out foggy and have fumes coming out of the glass … It smelt chemical, like gas and diesel. It was petrifying.”A series of long-chain di carboxylic acids with chains of different lengths. Named after the Greek word diabollo meaning to mislead. [31] Periodic acid Or per-iodic acid, is pronounced / ˌ p ɜːr aɪ ˈ ɒ d ɪ k/ PURR-eye- OD-ik and not * / ˌ p ɪər i ˈ ɒ d ɪ k/ PEER-ee- OD-ik. It refers to one of two interconvertible species: HIO 4 (metaperiodic acid), or H 5IO 6 (orthoperiodic acid – illustrated at right). The per- prefix in the name denotes that iodine is present in its highest possible (+VII) oxidation state. Curran, Dennis P. (1985). "Tandem radical approach to linear condensed cyclopentanoids. Total synthesis of (.+-.)-hirsutene". Journal of the American Chemical Society. 107 (5): 1448–1449. doi: 10.1021/ja00291a077. Compound Crazy” is one of the most important current trends, as was announced at the last Toy Fair in New York in February 2019 This molecule's always good for a laugh! It gets its 'commical' name since it's a constituent of the plant Commiphora pyracanthoides, one of the Myrrh trees. When reduced to the aldehyde, I presume the product would be named commic al?

Thanks to 'Sparkly' Sally Ewen of Bristol University for suggesting DEAD and to Leppänen Mikko-Pekka of Aalto University School of Chemical Technology, Finland, for DAD. This gets its name from the similarity of its 2D structure to a penguin. The effect is slightly lost in the 3D model, though. It's real name is: 3,4,4,5-tetramethylcyclohexa-2,5-dienone. Huisgen et al. Chem. Ber. 1970, 103, 2611. Thanks to Matthew J. Dowd, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA, for supplying this one. This is a constituent of some Australian lichens, such as Parmelia constipata. I don't know why these lichens were called this, maybe eating them causes constipation? Derivatives of constipatic acid include protoconstipatic acid, dehydroconstipatic acid, and methyl constipatate. Thanks to Eric Walters from The Chicago Medical School for suggesting this molecule, and to Liz Parnell and Les Unwin for some info about it.

This molecule sounds better if it's hyphenated (but-anal), but it is actually quite a common aldehyde. BARF (tetrakis[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]borate), a fluoroaryl borate B(Ar(CF 3) 2) 4 −, used as a non-coordinating anion [25] This mineral gets its 'enigmatic' name from the fact that its chemical composition was originally difficult to determine. It is an iron and titanium silicate with sodium as a charge balancing cation, although because it does not easily fit into the current classification system, it is classified as an 'Unclassified Silicate'. These two molecules are both named after their distinctive shapes. Propellane (left), C 5H 6, resembles a propeller, whereas cubane (right), C 8H 8, is a cube (but doesn't come from Cuba). Other molecules that get their name from their geometric shapes are: dodecahedrane C 20H 20, prismane C 6H 6, spherands and hemispherands, squaric acid C 4H 2O 4 and deltic acid C 3H 2O 3, tetrahedranes C 4H 4 and C 20H 36 and finally twistane C 10H 16.Thanks to Victoria Barclay of Advanced Chemistry Development, Inc., Toronto, for providing the info on this molecule. Nine names for a simple solvent? Why? It's because the nomenclature of organic compounds is an unadulterated nightmare, consisting of "systematic" names - those that identify specific structures and “trivial names,” which have nothing to do with the structure of the chemical and can be pretty crazy.
