The Extended Rule of 25, used to define 'strong' openings, has been ditched. It was a bit too complicated. Instead we have the concept of controls, in which an Ace is worth twocontrols, and a King one. The definition of 'strong' has now been simplified to any hand containing 16+ HCP, or 12+ HCP and 5+controls. There is not usually a fee for this, though we can charge a reasonable fee based on the administrative cost of providing the information if a request is manifestly unfounded or excessive or for requests for further copies of the same information. The committee decided not to make any changes to the amenities and refreshments provided since the re-start. We are bound to make mistakes, and we ask in advance for your patience and understanding. We also ask for your help, and not just in terms of moral support. Whether you voted for us or not, now is the time to get behind this committee. There are many tasks to be done, and we will gladly parcel up eachtask to suit your skills and energies. Five members then came came forward to stand for committee positions, so the investigation and negotiations were halted. Other Attendees not on the outgoing Committee I favour an early restart, being aware that some may be nervous and that attendance figures may be low initially. Monday's session was marred by several pairs who, one assumes,failed either to listen to the director or to look closely at the BridgePal handset display before they inspectedtheir cards. On at least one table, everyone looked at the wrong cards, realised their mistake, then rotated the board 90 degrees to get the correct orientation. On other tables, pairs who had looked at the wrong cards completed the board atthe wrong orientation. Goodness knows how they scored it on the handset. Other pairs played the entire round on the wrong orientation. Temperature-taking and lateral flow testing are not very accurate at all. A colleague had a normal temperature four hours before, and a normal flow test six hours before getting COVID symptoms.
