About this deal

When you let it breathe and open up the nose on this is one of the best, very oldskool. Those aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans, nuts and chocolate is truly something to behold. side note: Dear whisky marketers, please stop saying you only use the finest oak, it means nothing. EVERYONE says they only use the finest oak casks and mathematically that just isn’t possible. This is an eye-rolling, cringe-worthy, ghost statement. Use your words to give us real, useful, info about the process. The only way “we only use the finest oak casks” would mean anything is if there were brands touting their use of only the most tired and worn-out 5th+ fill casks. That will never happen, so please. Stop the garbage marketing fluff. What’s nice to read is their embracing of inconsistency. Not every batch or bottle will taste the same. And that’s fine. Good, in fact. Obviously, they’ll always be recognisably Benromach, but the little differences and incongruities that make matured whisky the product that it is deserve to be celebrated, not polished over. The more you’ll taste, the more you’ll zone in on the little differences, and the broader you vocabulary will organically become. In reality there are normally no more than two or three “dominant” characteristics in a whisky, which tend to be the ones we flag up first in tasting notes. The other flavours and aromas are where things get particularly individual and personal – for instance where I’ve said “peach” another taster might get a different stone fruit – or perhaps a different fruit entirely. Peated to 12-14ppm, so a little less than Highland Park, then matured in 80% ex-bourbon and 20% ex-sherry and married for the tenth year in sherry casks.

No partnership, joint venture, agency, or employment relationship is created as a result of your use of the Service.A beautifully balanced combination of bourbon casks and Oloroso sherry casks with a slightly peated spirit. It is lovely, with sherry undertones and smoky overtones. It is beautifully balanced with a dry and gorgeous finish. The finish on this whisky takes centre stage.. it is long and satisfying. On the palate is a light whisky with a medium body. It has some light wood smoke notes, followed by a fruitier side. A touch of barley and nuts with some baked apple notes. There are also some raisins and a citrus touch. More nuts come forward, with a bit of vanilla and honey. A souvenir of apple pie. The finish is medium and warm, with some smoke notes lingering on the palate. With the reopening of Benromach, Gordon & MacPhail wanted to try this classic approach. To do so, they use mostly medium-peated barley (12 ppm). And the result is, obviously, a lightly peated single malt.

Enter Benromach 10, which I grabbed in December, whilst in search of a New Year’s Eve bottle that wouldn’t bore me to sleep before midnight. Owned by the excellent independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach is a small distillery in Forres which purports to make Speyside whisky ‘the old fashioned way’. You may find it helpful to take a peek at the flavour wheels here: http://malt-review.com/2015/09/10/whisky-flavour-wheels-and-colour-charts/ and I’d also massively recommend looking at the WSET systematic approach to tasting (designed for wine, mostly, but it feeds very well into spirits too). Finish drifts off into the night on a smoky ashy trail leaving the drinker wondering what exactly happened… on first sniff and sip that is. Once you know what to expect and settle in, this whisky shows a nice complexity and the ride becomes less jarring, more even and more enjoyable. The The Benromach 10 Years is a good sipping malt. Benromach 10 is the starting point in the Benromach range. It is aged mostly in ex-bourbon American oak barrels and some Sherry barrels for 9 years. Later on, it is married for a year more in Sherry barrels. It is bottled at 43% abv.

Tasting notes are a pretty arcane, nebulous business – so much of it is completely personal – and no one starts off with a big vocabulary of them. Like anything else, it’s just a case of tasting lots of whiskies, and maybe just thinking of one or two elements that stand out most strongly in each one. A few months ago they changed the presentation, which caused a stir again but not in the same way. It may have increased visibility on the shelf, but most agreed it was a slightly strange visual identity for this kind of whisky. It's true what they say about Benromach 10 100° that it's a gorgeous unique Speyside scotch, amongst the finest in any range age and price. In the glass, Benromach 10 is gold with medium tears. On the nose, it starts with some light peated notes, accompanied by a herbaceous touch full of wet grass fragrances. There are some fruity notes, mostly citrus, but also pear and apple. There are some sweet aromas, lead by butter and malted barley notes, and a touch of caramel. Whiskybase B.V. The best thing is, I can still remember writing those tasting notes. There’s this snapshot edged into my retina. Me sitting at the dining table having this sort of emotional moment. Not because it was the best whisky I ever tasted. But simply because a trusty friend showed up and exceeded expectations. Maybe that’s why I haven’t taken the time to sit down and write tasting notes once again – afraid to be disappointed. Benromach 10 is a fantastic starting point for those who want to try smoky whiskies. It has the style of a classic and traditional whisky, so it won’t disappoint those whisky lovers, but it also allows you to discover new nuances and details. This is one of those basics to have at home, perfect for a dram at any time. This whisky is like a "young" at heart Grampa. He isn't a perfect individual but he's likeable, perhaps loveable and has heart. And while he might be all the above, he isn't the most "out there old guy"... he's calm, relaxed, interesting enough but not terribly so to make you always want to revisit him day after day, but when you do, you have to slow down to his pace to see just what he's all about and appreciate it. That is this whisky. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019
