About this deal

I would buy belts with different flexibilities for your higher grit belts. It may also be worthwhile grabbing a 120 grit zirconium belt to give you an opportunity to work with different materials. Built-into this device is an adjustable eye shield to add an extra layer of protection against shrapnel. Unfortunately, it’s only for the grinder. But since this has a true grinding wheel rather than the sanding wheel on most belt grinders, you’ll be able to use it as a round grinding surface when making knives. Beyond these specifications, belt grinder machines themselves also vary a lot in design. This doesn’t just consider aesthetics, but it has more to do with how well the machine fits the user. There are many attachments buyers can add or seek out in a grinder that will change the overall look of the blade as well. Design Belt grinders are classified by the width and length of their belt size. For example, 1x30 grinder has a 1-inch wide belt that is 30 inches in circumference, a 2x72 has a 2-inch wide belt, that is 72 inches in circumference.

Work tables help you grind precise angles into your material and give you stability. That’s great, but the way a knife is shaped, there aren’t many times you’ll be laying it flat and sanding the edge flat. Instead, you’ll want to hold the knife by hand so you’re free to move the knife however you need to shape it. Remember, knife making is an art form. You’ll need to feel it out. There are also belts that have their abrasive materials glued onto the belt in little piles that can continue to cut effectively as the abrasive material is grinded off. These belts are said to have structured abrasives. Structured abrasives are often made of AO or aluminum oxide, but this is not always the case. Belts made out of structured AO will last longer than unstructured AO. But our dislikes vastly outweighed the good things we could say about this machine. It’s much too small. A compact footprint is great, but this one is so small it’s hard to work on. Worse, it’s underpowered. Like many similar belt grinders we tested, this one has a 0.33-HP motor. But this one bogs down substantially when under pressure. When you start applying pressure to shape your blade, the last thing you want is for the machine to move. Machines that aren’t completely stable can make it very difficult to create precise shapes. A range of self adhesive platen pads are available to enable the operator to achieve their best work from their Beltit. Seco's platen pads are interchangeable with several tools available on the international market, including Dynabrade and ATA tools. All of Seco's spare parts are competitively priced and readily available. Also Available at: Walmart 10. Best Inexpensive Belt Grinder—Central Machinery 1-Inch x 30-Inch Belt Sander As you would expect, more horse power is better. Stronger motors allow you to run at higher speeds and allows you to run coarser paper. A common rule of thumb is to have 1hp for every 1″ of belt. This means for knife making on a 2″x72″ grinder you will want a motor that has around 2hp. That being said, I wouldn’t take this rule of thumb too seriously, as I know a lot of talented knife makers that use a 1hp or 1.5hp motor on their 2″x72″grinder, and they make phenomenal knives. How Much Belt Speed Does My Belt Grinder Need For Knife Making? There was a time when people made knives because they needed to rely on them for survival. Today, few of us use handmade tools that we personally crafted for daily survival. But the art of knife making is growing in popularity as a way to increase your skills, become more self-sufficient, and just have some fun making a tool that you’ll actually use. Same brand as before, they make good high grit AO belts. Best Aluminum oxide 400 grit belt for knives

As I alluded to earlier, grits above 220 I switch to AO. Best Aluminum oxide 320 grit belt for knives The speed at which your belt travels is the third key component to grinding steel. It needs to move significantly faster than a wood-sander to grind optimally. The 2x48” machines in our shop run at 4100 surface feet per minute (sfpm). If you have a good controlled process and can measure the abrasive belt performance we find that in 36, 60 and 80 grit applications the Cibo Ceramics are the most cost effective almost every time, on steel, aluminium & stainless steel. We supply a wide range of sanding belts for metals. The Cibo Ceramic belts are particularly suited to aggressive sanding & grinding. Our two most popular zirconium oxide (zirconia) sanding belts would be HZ72 and TZ59 materials. both are available from 24 grit up to 120 grit. Surface grinding attachments are used for cleaning and smoothing down rough edges on flat surfaces. FF87 is our more flexible ceramic abrasive sanding belt. We particularly recommend the FF87 belts for finer sanding with powerfile machines and also with tube polishers.
