About this deal

Clean Air Zones, such as London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone, require diesel cars and vans to be Euro6, otherwise a daily charge is required to enter the zone. No one is quite sure where the urine myth originated from, but the confusion is down to the primary ingredient, urea. You may be asking ‘what’s AdBlue and why do I need it?” AdBlue is a special liquid that’s sprayed into diesel car exhausts to reduce the amount of harmful gases released into the environment by diesel engines. ISO 22241-4:2019 Diesel engines — NOx reduction agent AUS 32". ISO (International Organization for Standardization). 1 July 2019.

The 5 Facts and Fiction of Diesel Exhaust Fluid". Victory Blue - Diesel Exhaust Fluid. 2016. Archived from the original on 29 December 2017 . Retrieved 29 December 2017. Adblue gets injected into the exhaust system to create a chemical reaction that reduces the amount of NOx the car produces at the tailpipe. NH 2) 2CO + 4 NO + O 2 → 4 N 2 + 4 H 2O + 2CO 2 and 4 (NH 2) 2CO + 6 NO 2 → 7 N 2 + 8 H 2O + 4CO 2 and (NH 2) 2CO + NO + NO 2 → 2 N 2 + 2 H 2O + CO 2 If you happen to run out of AdBlue while driving, the engine’s power and performance will be reduced. The car does this to prevent any potential damage to the system occurring. Should this happen it is recommended that you immediately drive to the nearest service station where AdBlue is available and refill the tank.

The purpose of AdBlue is to break down the harmful gases in the exhaust system. While many diesel cars don't use AdBlue, the Euro6 emissions standard made it very difficult for carmakers to meet the standard without it. That has meant the system has become increasingly common, particularly amongst modern European diesel vehicles. How does AdBlue work? AdBlue is a liquid solution of urea (the stuff found in urine), and when it meets a hot exhaust system it releases ammonia which is a catalyst to a chemical reaction that converts dangerous Nitrogen Oxides into two harmless products – water vapour and Nitrogen. Both products occur naturally, and so can be pumped out of an AdBlue equipped car without any ill effects.

What’s more, when your SCR-equipped vehicle’s AdBlue levels are running low, a warning alert will appear on the dashboard. If it runs out completely, the car will lose power and reduce its emissions in line with legal standards. Its performance will be returned when its AdBlue tank has been replenished. If your diesel vehicle uses AdBlue, then it will also use a treatment system called Selective Catalytic Reduction – otherwise known as SCR.It’s for these reasons that governments set limits on vehicular NOx emissions and promote the use of AdBlue®. This improves air quality and reduces the danger of diesel pollution-related illness and death. It is a trade name registered by the German car manufacturers association, so not every car uses it. In early December 2021, the Australian National Road Transport Association also raised concerns about a shortage of DEF in the country due to the shortage of urea in China. [30] China capped exports to protect its domestic supplies and rising DEF prices. By mid-December there was approximately 7 weeks’ supply of AdBlue left in Australia. [31] If you suspect AdBlue contamination, you must not use the solution and dispose of safely as it can damage your engines

Once you’ve stopped, the majority of modern cars cannot be restarted while the AdBlue tank is completely empty. Fortunately, this situation is easily avoidable, as AdBlue refills are straightforward and usually relatively cheap if you shop around and do them yourself. Sparkes, David (3 December 2021). "Diesel crisis threatens to grind Australia to a halt, transport industry warns". ABC News. Archived from the original on 3 January 2022 . Retrieved 6 January 2022. Your tank which holds white diesel fuel is not designed for AdBlue so make sure you don’t mix the tanks up If you need to buy AdBlue or would like someone to fill your tank for you, you can compare the prices of garages local to you using our free booking tool. It can be found in urine most commonly, but is also produced by some moulds and fungi. The human body produces urea from the liver, when it breaks down proteins and amino acids. If you accidentally put diesel in your AdBlue tank, the best thing to do is stay where you are and call your recovery provider. To avoid expensive damage, do not start the engine. Many new diesel cars use a fluid called AdBlue. If your car uses AdBlue, you'll probably need to top it up at least once between services. The rate at which it is consumed depends on the size of the car and the driving style; the more economical the car and driver, the slower it will be used. VW estimates that theTiguan and Passat use 1.5 litres of AdBlue every 620 miles, and suggests that a tankful of AdBlue gives a driving range of 3,000-4,000 miles for the Tiguan, and 4,000-6,500 miles for the Passat. AdBlue® is classified as a non-hazardous product. It is biodegradable, water soluble and colourless. AdBlue® is a premium product that ensures a smooth-running SCR system in any make of vehicle, thus helping to reduce tailpipe emissions.
