About this deal

The Custodes have these two distinct groupings for their theology focused the Emperor. and spend countless hours studying, discussing and debating amongst themselves. They are the speculum certus and speculum obscurus.

Insistent Terminology: Aleya prefers the term Anathema Psykana to Sisters of Silence, as she finds it more descriptive. All for Nothing: In The Emperor's Legion, Tieron's efforts to assemble the High Lords to free the Custodes to operate outside the palace ultimately amount to naught. The proposition is about to get voted down when the Days of Blindness strike, and afterwards, Guilliman is in charge and passes the act by himself. Moreover, it turns out that the Custodes have already been operating freely outside the Palace for millennia. I was greatly surprised to find this book was brilliant. Its not just Custodes doing stuff, it's a great depiction of 40k Terra. After learning what horus heresy Terra was like, the author does a great job of comparing the two through only the barest knowledge his characters possess. The reader of course is able to fill in the blanks and see the greater decline the Imperium is in before the Indomitus Crusade.

Great Offscreen War: While the story is largely a political drama, there are no less than four different conflicts mentioned as happening offscreen. In the second book, Valerian finds himself realizing that he enjoys true battle, and can't keep still in the Imperial Palace the way he used to. Custodes can earn names for more than Battle. Valerian, the main Custodes character in the book earned plenty of names through his "contemplation of the mysteries." Devoting an ever increasing number of complex terminology to their oral testimony of their perilous vehement deeds whenever they enter that foe's arena as if they were adhering to a secret cult with an highly unreserved belief that casual language is an inexcusable heresy only admissible to the detestable foe’s that they are about to purge while describing the entire incident with as many adjectives as it’s humanly possible. While this exhausting practice is not entirely without it’s own literal benefits, a spectator such as I, would consider it to be somewhat refreshing if…

It can take at least two years of wrangling for the Officio Assassinorum to get a warrant to use an Eversor Assassin.

Canon Immigrant: Aleya and Valoris were eventually made into miniatures in the Warhammer 40K tabletop game, with rules that preserve their Bash Siblings dynamic. And that is all for now. I tried to get a bit of a mix of the important, the minor and the simply interesting. How you enjoyed! Karma Houdini: Not counting their losses in the battle with the Custodes, the Minotaurs are never punished for siding with Imperium Eterna, despite the fact that assaulting the Custodians would spell death for any other Chapter. Fallen Hero: Underplayed; the leaders of the Splintered are various figures of authority on Terra, like administrators, cardinals, and Arbites leaders, who have used the turmoil on the planet for a power grab when they should've been the planet's first line of defense. Nothing about any kind of strategic or tactical decisions. Nothing about how they are using terrain or why they use specific equipment (except that it feels good to smash enemies). Not even in which way some troops are better at fighting than others. Even lore specific details are uncommon. Sure, I didn’t expect battle reports, but god damn, some kind of substance would be nice instead of a constant stream of dry, academic flavour text. At least some (although likely more than just some) Sisters of Silence resent how they've been treated, as little more than cast off of the Adeptus Terra. There is even some thinking that the seperartion of the Custodes and the SoS was perhaps a way to reign in the influence of the Talons of the Emperor.

Action Girl: Tanau Aleya is an Anti-Magic-wielding demon slayer, as are her fellow Sisters of Silence. The Emperor's Legion tells a new story set at the heart of Terra, from the POV of three main characters: A custodes, a sister of silence, and the chancellor. Each one contributes an essential pillar to the full narrative by which we experience a new dawn upon the Imperium, and how these consequences spread throughout the entire inner workings of the dystopic machine of the Imperium to tremble its very core. Chris Wraight manages to establish the setting and somber mood of Terra through the eyes of different perspectives that work out quite well in the full panorama, giving us a glimpse of what is like to be a human in such place and in such times. The construction of Terra and the way the scenarios are laid out is a fascinating new insight into the lore, as well as an entertaining journey through an industrial, overly zealous hell. Almighty Janitor: The Chancellor of Senatorum Imperialis. On paper, their job is to make sure that all the actually-powerful High Lords meet together on the regular, and to handle the paperwork for said meetings. In practice, they not only have spies in almost every branch of the Palace, but they act as the liaisons and mediators between the Senatorum's various primadonnas, allowing them to influence the politics of the entire Imperium.Q: Is Vaults of Terra: The Carrion Throne a one-off, or will we be seeing more with those characters? Do not assume the High Lords are administration loving bafoons who govern the Imperium ineffectually. (Ish)
