About this deal

Thank you to Random House and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own. The stories of Vietnamese refugees in Orange Co. of their escapes after the Fall of Saigon and the reestablishment of their lives are fascinating and inspirational. Bao Phan, the sensitive art teacher, becomes a store owner, happy to do so because he, his wife and daughter escaped and lived. Teh Vietnamese community seems to always be fighting the hatred of those with resentment toward Vietnamese refugees, or just any refugee, or just any non-white. Ben and Natasha piece together the murder of the dog and the murder of the agent with a local white supremacy group, led by a young man who is the son of the town councilman, Ian Rowan. The recruit refers to Jacob Clay, the disturbed young teenager building bombs in his garage whom Ian recruits into white supremacy. Before long, Ben has discovered a large cult living above Big Bear, led by a reverend determined to cleanse the world and create an Aryan race. This is my first taste of author Alan Drew's work and I found it to be quite well-written. I accepted an arc from the publisher via NetGalley not knowing it is the second book in his Detective Ben Wade series, but had no trouble jumping in here. I will definitely make a point of reading book one now and any others to come. Something I learnt throughout the story was that being attentive could come in handy, this was because when James was in his Russian class, he had to pay attention because all that knowledge would come in handy for reading the instructions that were only in the language that they learnt. They would have to use their knowledge of the language they were learning or else if they didn't know then they wouldn't be able to pass basic training.

Nearly five years ago, I read and reviewed Shadow Man by Alan Drew, and I said it was “the best kind of novel: one that truly entertains the reader while making us THINK. Ben Wade is a great character, and I hope Shadow Man is the first in a series.” Then my (long) wait began, and finally I was ecstatic to receive a copy of The Recruit from Random House and NetGalley in exchange for this honest review. It took place in LA, Orange County, CA and sometimes in Big Bear - I grew up here and it was fun to picture everything that was in the book. Thao, Phillipe (September 25, 2022). The Recruit is a 2004 young adult novel by British novelist Robert Muchamore. It is the first book of twelve in the CHERUB series. The novel follows unfortunate teenager James Choke, later named James Adams. James, reeling from the death of his mother, is sent to live in a children’s home, only to be recruited by a spy organization. The Recruit has been translated into twelve languages, and there is also a graphic novel adaptation of the book by Ian Edginton.

Title meaning: "That Sounds Like a You Problem" (Technically, Owen says, "Wow, sounds like a you problem".) Parents need to understand that simply reading a series of books isn't going to make a child violent, a sex addict or craving heroine. That is entirely down to who they choose to be around as well as their parents being good role models. a b c d Zorrilla, Mónica Marie (April 28, 2021). Following the last book in the CHERUB series, it was revealed that a trilogy would be released starting from August 2011 that will focus on a new set of CHERUB agents centred upon Ryan Sharma and also involve an sixteen year old Lauren Adams. The first book will be called People's Republic. The final mission was incredibly lame. The whole book spent time building up to these huge event that the main character would take part in. But, although the scenario unique, the author could have done A LOT more to make it more dangerous, more suspenseful, more incognito. Let's talk about the characters/ships now. James is the main character, who starts off as a bully and ends up being a very kind and loyal friend. It will be a lie to say I didn't like him, although at first I really despised his behavior. He never stops fighting, is brave and wants to protect his sister. And of course likes literally every girl he sees xD Ben and Natasha are likable and realistically flawed characters. Natasha’s got a good heart and an even sharper mind. And Ben is working hard to wake up to his own faults. If Drew wrote another book about these two, it would be on my reading list.

This was a compelling, thought provoking and brutal book. I enjoyed being reacquainted with Ben and Natasha. They are a great couple, and I enjoyed the investigation. The Recruit is the first novel in the CHERUB series, written by Robert Muchamore. It introduces most of the main characters, such as James Adams (formerly Choke), Lauren Adams (formerly Onions), Kyle Blueman, and Kerry Chang. It was released in the United Kingdom by Hodder Children's Books on 30 April 2004, and by Simon Pulse in the United States on 30 August 2005. a b Shafer, Ellise (September 24, 2022). Namely, abusive, angst-ridden twelve year old boys who brutalize women without remorse don't make good main characters.
