About this deal

I’ve set the ‘walking’ option to 50% NC so I can have some situational awareness while going around town on foot (and not risk being run over). I want the full NC treatment on noisy trains, however. The automation works: soon after getting on a train, I hear the headphones go ‘ping’ and ramp up the silence. Should you choose to use volume controls instead of one of the above options, a single tap raises your volume while long-pressing decreases it. Due to the way the WF-1000XM4 handle noise cancellation, I didn’t mind sacrificing ambient sound control in favour of volume control. It would be nice to access all three sets of controls simultaneously, however. So how long will these headphones last on a charge? There are a lot of factors but, after a few days of testing, we found a good benchmark to be around 30 hours or so. Over a period of four days while the headphones were being tested (five hours a day x four days) they didn’t need to be recharged at all, ending the final night at around 30% battery life remaining. Arguably the biggest changes to the Sony WH-1000XM3 compared to the XM2 are found in the design of the headphones: they’re lighter than the previous model and more form-fitting as well. We tested them on someone who finds a lot of headphones too uncomfortable to wear for long periods, these they could actually live with. They also fold up very neatly ( unlike the new Bose NC700) , and come with a smart fabric case for travelling.

I’d definitely recommend making use of the Sony WH-1000XM3’s capacity for LDAC and aptX HD codecs. If your (Android) device is compatible, these codecs offer a higher data transfer rate, and the difference is very noticeable. I wear glasses half the time, which means the headphones’ cushions don’t form a perfect seal around my ears. To my ears, the Optimizer makes a difference in improving the quality of noise cancellation. With the feature on and “automatic switching based on actions” enabled in the app, the earbuds will switch between noise cancelling and ambient sound modes depending on what you’re doing at the time. the touch controls are good, but if you are in wired mode (eg sitting on a plane for 14 hours plugged into their movies) then they no longer work. They only one that does work is putting your hand over the RH cup to mute the sound. Physical buttons would have been better, but how old fashioned. This headset has been well thought out for wireless use. Equipped with Bluetooth 5.0 technology, it offers the best current compatibility with AAC, LDAC and even HD aptX support, which keeps quality loss to a minimum. Easy to pair, the headset also features NFC to speed up the detection of devices to be connected through the fast pair feature. The headphones are outfitted with a multitude of Bluetooth profiles such as HSP for profiling personal settings, AVRCP for controlling the audio side of videos and A2DP for setting the headphones' audio distribution. Long Battery LIfeThe XM4 are more convenient to use, too. While the XM3 only connect to one device at a time, the XM4 can connect to two devices – such as your laptop and phone – simultaneously. It may sound like a subtle difference but it can make your life a whole lot easier. Much like their predecessors, the Sony WH-1000XM3 are premium wireless over-the-ear headphones. They have active noise cancellation (ANC), Bluetooth and near-field communication (NFC) connectivity. These days, Sony has embraced wireless headphone technology, adopted new digital file standards, and made considerable strides in techniques like voice activation and miniaturisation. The result is a range of headphones that offers an audio solution for all sorts of music, gaming, and TV fans. So let's discover the collection and tease out which models are right for your needs. What Types of Headphones do Sony Have to Offer? Further controls and customisation options are available via the Headphones Connect app, available for Android and iOS. The options contained within aren’t terribly useful, but if you want to tweak how much noise-cancelling is deployed for certain activities, or disable the auto-off feature, this is where you need to do it. Being able to customise how much sound makes its way into your ears in those four scenarios is very useful, and the noise cancellation on offer is top drawer. It isn’t quite class-leading – Bose’s QuietComfort Earbuds still hold that crown – but it was able to drown out a sizable chunk of the noise on a busy train full of jubilant England football fans, which is no mean feat.

What’s more, the buds incorporate a couple of the best features from their over-ear stablemates, the Sony WH-1000XM4. Speak-to-Chat has been added, as has the ability for the buds to learn about places you visit and automatically switch noise-cancelling profiles to suit those environments. It works consistently well and can be customised to suit your needs. Out of the box, voice detection sensitivity adjusts automatically based on your environment, but you can choose low or high sensitivity if you find this doesn’t work for you.

The Sony WH-1000XM3 were one of the finest noise-cancelling headphones around when they first launched, and heading in 2023 they still offer an excellent performance at a terrific price. Design

When Sony created the XM3, it got the recipe spot on. At the time, they were as close to a perfect pair of noise-cancellers as one could find. Today, they're still great all-rounders and a superb buy for the money. While it will connect with each of my computers etc, it refuses to connect to my partner's MacBook Pro even when its little blue light is flashing indicating it is pairing mode - it just doesn't appear in the list of nearby devices. Have given up trying to get a connection.

Essentially, there’s nothing to complain about here. The clarity and detail offered means that a recording’s sonic flaws can become exposed, but that’s hardly the Sonys’ fault. The generally crisp, sparkly treble is ample compensation as far as we’re concerned.

The eartips provided are made from polyurethane foam rather than the industry-standard silicone, and the malleable material took a bit of getting used to. The foam does isolate sound well, however, and didn’t cause any undue pressure on my ear canals. Sony has improved the quality and increased the quantity of microphones used for voice calls, so whoever you’re talking to should hear you more clearly. But if you’re more concerned with keeping the outside world at bay, Sony has also improved its already superb noise-cancelling. You can now set the function to be permanently on, even when not playing anything, meaning that you can use the noise-cancelling to quieten everything down for a peaceful nap. Noise cancellation – We've talked about this already in the context of the WH-1000XM3, but what does it mean? Basically, when you listen to any set of headphones, external noise will intrude to some degree. No headphones are entirely shielded from the outside world, and this can often cause serious losses of audio quality. Designers achieve this in a couple of ways. Firstly, they use shapes and materials to manipulate sound. The “ear muffs” associated with older headphones are there to screen out external noise. But that can only go so far. More modern noise cancellation technology takes an “active” approach. In this case, headphones detect external noise, and then create a sonic antidote to cancel it out. Think of it like “anti-noise.” The result is often a dramatic improvement, with annoying drones and buzzing eliminated, and this doesn't just benefit music fans. It's also a massive benefit for phone conversations. So if you intend to use your headphones with a smartphone, noise cancellation is a handy feature indeed. I tried the Optimizer on the ground and the Headphones Connect app gave me a reading of 1.0 atm (standard atmosphere). When I tried it again at 35,000ft in the air, the reading dropped down to 0.8 atm. Clearly the headphones thought there was a difference, but I didn’t hear the NC behave any differently. Both headphones feature Sony's excellent noise-cancelling, which shuts out the world with impressive efficiency, but the XM4 go the extra mile. They use a new algorithm and new Bluetooth System on Chip to analyse outside noise in even greater detail.

The Sony WF-1000XM4 are a breeze to set up, particularly if you’re using an Android phone. They support Google Fast Pair so all you need to do is take the buds out of their case and you’ll receive a pop-up prompting you to connect them to your device. It worked perfectly with my Realme 6i, but pairing them with my iPhone 8 was hardly a chore – you simply connect as normal via the Bluetooth menu on the settings screen. Adaptive sound control was available on the Sony WF-1000XM4’s predecessors but, this time, you can have the buds switch settings based on your location as well.
