About this deal

The white C-shaped larvae then emerge into the soil from June and start to eat the roots of the plant. They can feed until October. Encourage wildlife in the garden. Vine weevils and their grubs are eaten by a variety of predators such as birds, frogs, toads, shrews, hedgehogs and predatory ground and rovebeetles There are three ways of controlling vine weevil: chemical, biological control and physical barriers. Controlling vine weevil grubs The adults are active between the end of June and October. In daylight you might spot the odd one walking across the patio or on the wall of the house. If you go out at night with a torch there’s a good chance you will see them feeding on the foliage. Vine weevil can feedon a wide range of plants, both indoors and outdoors, but can be especially damaging to plants grown in containers. It is a verywidespread andcommon insect. The adult weevils eat leavesduring spring and summer, but it is the grubs that can cause the most damage over autumn and winter when they feed on plant roots. This damage can resultin wilting andplant death.

The adult vine weevils eat your leaves between April and October, which gives it the energy to lay eggs. It’s highly unlikely you’ll be able to see the vine weevil eggs in compost or soil as they’re so tiny - less than 1mm. However, they can’t jump upwards, and they can’t fly. So if you see a bug doing either of these things, you’re looking at a different pest. Vine weevil-resistant plants Pour the solution over the compost, at the recommended rate. A litre of solution treats 10 litres of compost. Ornamental plants grown in containers can be treated with the systemic neonicotinoid insecticide acetamiprid (e.g. Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer) as a liquid drench applied to the compost. This insecticide gives protection against the grubs for up four months; treatment in mid- to late summer will control the young larvae and prevent damage occurring later in the autumn to spring period. This product cannot be used to treat edible plants or ornamental plants growing in the groundKeep out of reach of children. Always read instructions before use. Wash splashes off skin immediately. Keep off skin. Do not breathe spray. Wash hands and exposed skin after use. Biological controlfor the larvae is available as microscopic insect pathogenic nematodes. Several species and combinations are available ( Steinernema kraussei, Heterorhabditis megidis, H. bacteriophora and S. feltiae). They are availablefrom suppliers of biological controls and as sachet formulations available from some retail outlets. They are suitable for use in containers and in the open ground. For best results apply in August or early September when the soil temperature or potting mediais warm enough for the nematodes to be effective ( Steinernema species 5-20ºC/41-68ºF Heterorhabditus species 12-20ºC/ 54-68ºF) and before the vine weevil grubs have grown large enough to cause serious damage Vine weevil is a very widespread insect in Britain. Gardeners with vine weevil should keep up their guard because stopping control measures after the apparent disappearance of the weevil can allow numbers to build up again. Nematodes work for six weeks, but give up to four months since they prevent the larvae from hatching into adults and causing another lifecycle.

Bug killers are not all bad but lots are. It all depends on how they work and how they are applied. Vine weevil is one plant insect pest that most gardeners live in fear of. And it is a pest to worry about. Suddenly, otherwise healthy-looking plants collapse and die thanks to the root-eating, soil-borne grubs. The Nematop® Weevil-Stop trap can be used at the same time as Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer for a two pronged assault on the pests, which should prove to be twice as effective. However, the nematodes within the special gel need a higher temperature before they become active. It is therefore recommended the soil temperature be at least 12°C, and so May would be the ideal time to position the wooden traps.Vine-weevil grubs usually hatch after two weeks and immediately start to feed on the roots of their host. Fully-grown grubs burrow deeper into the soil to pupate, usually in late spring. Most adults do not emerge until the following June or July, when the whole cycle starts over again. Is the vine-weevil life cycle different indoors? Weevils are a group of several families of beetles in thesuperfamily Curculionoidea, there are more than 500 species in the UK. All feed on plant material, mostly live plants but a few feed on dry seeds (grain weevils) or rotting wood. Most do not cause noticeable damage to garden plants and several species are uncommon.Vine weevil is classified in a subfamily of the known as the broad nosed weevils (Entiminae), so called because the of the broad snout (rostrum) these weevils have. There are over 100 species in this subfamily in Britain. More information on broad nosed weevils from UK Beetles. The nematodes can give poor results in dry or heavy soils. They work best in lighter soils and open potting composts, such as peat or coir. Nematodes can be used safely on all edible and ornamental plants

If spraying is the preferred option, and as long as it is safe to do so, then apply Bug Clear Ultra Vine Weevil Killer Concentrate from mid-June to August.

Symptoms

Another way is to use a physical barrier as the adult beetles cannot fly from plant to plant. Stand potted plants on upturned pots sat in saucers of water - the adults can't swim. Or surround the pots with Barrier Glue available from Agralan - the adults cannot walk across it. With either of these methods it is important to move plants away from walls or greenhouse/conservatory walls as the adults can jump down onto them; they cannot fly. Nemasys Vine Weevil Killer can be applied to pots or direct to the soil anytime from March to November. It is highly recommended to apply first in the spring and then again in the autumn to prevent the vine weevil grubs from overwintering in the soil or compost, ready to wreak havoc again in the following spring. Note that the nematodes are only active when soil temperatures are above 5°C. For the most effective control, simply add the nematodes to a watering can and apply directly to the open soil or directly to pots, tubs and containers.

Eggs start off white, but turn brown before they hatch, making them very difficult to spot in soil. Ideal for use on flowers, roses, ornamental plants grown in pots and hanging baskets outdoors and in conservatories. It can be used on any plants without affecting them, including edible or ornamental plants growing in the ground (unlike insecticides). Although vine weevil is one of the most troublesome of all garden pests the gardener now has some very effective methods of control options. In the first instance, look for signs of damage to leaves, which might indicate the presence of vine weevil. Plants that do not appear to be growing as well as they should, are sure signs that the vine weevil grubs may be active below ground. If you spot golden-brown or clear egg-like objects in the soil or compost then they're NOT vine weevil eggs. Vine weevil eggs are brown and tiny and you'd need a hand lens to see them. Clear spheres are usually slug or snail eggs and the golden-brown ones are actually controlled-release fertiliser! Some adult beetles also survive by finding sufficient places to shelter over winter, but again stop feeding until April. What do vine weevil eggs look like They are based on plant extracts, plant oils or other safe compounds and have to be sprayed directly on the to the pest that you are trying to control. As such they will take more than one application over several days to remove all pests. Or you can use Zee No Weevil, a granular product applied to the surface of compost or around the base of susceptible plants. It is made from dried, crushed olive pommace (the dried leftovers from making organic olive oil) and aromatic Mediterranean herbs.
