The original book that the series is named after was first published in January 1986. [3] It has many differences from what the TV series would have, with the titular item being kept inside a chest instead of on Floppy's collar. The latter would not always be on every adventure with the key, either and the adventures would take place in a magic doll house. At the end of those scenes we would have a big hug, arrange what we are going to do that evening and tell each other it’s all fine and that we’re still best friends." Alongside the main story, to fit in with the book's original educational values, there are helpful hints towards teaching children the best use of English. Executive Producer Sue Nott said: “We are so excited for our CBeebies viewers to see how we’ve brought the characters from the books to life in this warm, family-friendly series. At the heart of the show are the friendships of the children and how they play and work together to solve problems, and we hope our young viewers will be inspired to play, problem solve, have fun and use their imaginations to go on wonderful adventures.” New storylines will be written exclusively for this 25-episode TV version of Biff and Chip and will see the characters playing in the park, making up stories at home and exploring with their best friends. Their imaginations have no boundaries!

Biff and Gran are captured by trolls who want to use them in a people stew. But when Wilf tries to reason with the trolls, they think he's being rude. How can he make the trolls release them? Kipper has to choose which new product Fabulous Fancy Foods should promote. The answer is obvious to Floppy, but Kipper isn't very good at making decisions.
