About this deal

Librarian Note: There is more than one author in the Goodreads' database with this name. See this thread for more information. As the trial begins, Haller is forced to put his trust in his half-brother, Harry Bosch, a retired police detective, and a team of dedicated investigators to prove his innocence.

Another sweltering month in Charlotte, another boatload of mysteries past and present for overworked, overstressed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan. Connelly’s meticulous attention to detail and his ability to create authentic characters make the story compelling and engaging. Working with a co-counsel he knows well, Haller must prove his innocence to a panel of jurors who appear eager to hear what the state has to say. It’s sure to be a cutthroat trial where innocence will come second to the ability to spin tales. Haller has everything to lose as he finds himself in the hot seat, somewhere he’s not used to sitting. But a great deal of the narrative is devoted to the issue of finding the actual killer, and fans of the series will be delighted to know that biker Cisco, Haller’s main investigator, plays his part (though he isn’t quite as evident here as in some of the other books). Harry Bosch also makes an appearance, but sadly he is consigned to the sidelines as a mere bit player – although his contribution to the cause at hand is, of course, incisive and important.

Anyway, I admit it. Even I could summon a little sympathy for Haller this time around when the cops find a body in the trunk of his Lincoln after a pretext stop and then arrest and charge him with a murder he didn’t commit. The power of television and film was demonstrated to me by the fact that when I thought of Haller he wore the head of Matthew McConaughey and when Bosch arrived on the scene I saw and heard Titus Welliver. I think it’ll ever be thus.

Son los mejores thrillers legales que he leído nunca. Desde que leí la primera de la serie, El inocente (The Lincoln Lawyer), quedé enganchada y mereció la pena. He faces an uphill battle as he fights against a system that often favors the prosecution. So, he must find a way to convince the jury of his innocence.Los procedimientos legales son impecables, pero lo que más llama la atención en todas las novelas es la mente de Haller. For me, the characters truly brought this novel home. I have read every single book Michael Connelly has ever written (having started in the late 90’s) and I feel like I know the characters really well and think of them as friends. (Can I just say that the reappearance of Maggie McPherson was something else?!) I had no illusions about my innocence. I knew it was something only I could know for sure. And I knew that it wasn’t a perfect shield against injustice. It was no guarantee of anything. The clouds were not going to open for some sort of divine light of intervention. It’s when the teetotaller leaves The Redwood that his troubles begin. A cop car appears from nowhere and pulls him over. The Lincoln car that Haller is driving has apparently lost its rear number plate. Oh, and what’s that dripping from the boot and onto the road? Could it be BLOOD? But it isn't easy to build a defence from a cell in the Twin Towers Jail in downtown Los Angeles - as an officer of the court he is an instant target.
