Across all participating districts in 2022, the percentage of fourth-graders performing below NAEP Basic ranged from 30 to 79 percent and the large city average was 47 percent. In the 7 districts with larger proportions of students performing below NAEP Basic compared to 2019, percentage increases ranged from 7 to 14 percentage points; the increase at fourth-grade for large city schools was 4 percentage points. For confident and super-confident readers it is important that books are matched appropriately to their emotional maturity. Our school uses a myriad of reading schemes. The main one is Oxford Reading Tree (which includes Biff Chip and Kipper, plus Songbirds and Snapdragon series in the scheme). In reception they used Phonic Bugs books, and we’ve also had Pearson, Heinemann Storyworlds and Ginn 360 as well.Even if your child struggles a bit to read them without assistance, these books can still be beneficial in helping build their vocabulary, improve comprehension, and increase general knowledge—not to mention encourage their love of reading! If your child is struggling, the most important thing is to keep anxiety levels down. Learning to read involves complicated skills, and these can soon go to pieces if a child gets worried.
