About this deal

When it came to our head of flyaways, this serum had an immediate and impressive impact. We only continued smiling at our reflection as we noticed less static and overall dryness, with a bout of increased nourishment around our ends every time we styled our hair. What We Love: This formula only consists of nourishing ingredients that feel weightless on our strands, but it still includes everything to protect them from damage. What We Love: Luxuriously moisturizing, the spray left our curls feeling well-nourished and looking bouncier and better defined. Additionally, you should think of heat protectants as a way to mitigate damage, not fully prevent it. There are other steps you can take to maintain the health of your hair like not setting hot tools above 300 degrees if possible, wearing a hat if you’re in the sun for a long time, and incorporating conditioning hair masks into your weekly hair care routine.

Heat protectant sprays are really convenient and easy to apply, especially if you don’t like the feeling or hassle of applying hair products with your hands. Plus, spray formulas tend to be more lightweight than creams and serums. We love this one because it’s multi-tasking—not only does it protect strands against heat of up to 428 degrees, but it also doubles as a shine spray. The formula relies on peach and rosehip oils to hydrate and increase shine, as well as squalane to add moisture and prevent future damage. Shatalebi MA, Safaeian L, Baradaran A, Alamdarian M. Protective effect of conditioner agents on hair treated with oxidative hair dye. J Cosmet Dermatol. 2018;17(6):1090-1095. doi:10.1111/jocd.12484 During our test, we were pleased by how smoothly it glided through the hair, making it easy to brush out. We also appreciated that after evenly distributing it through the hair, there was no smoke, sizzling, or other signs of burning when using hot tools. Despite being a cream formula, it felt incredibly lightweight and never made hair look greasy or weighed down, rather it added a noticeable shine and smoothness to styled hair. And if you like hair products that give your hair a light fragrance, this one contains the brand's iconic Côte d’Azur scent which lingers for a few hours. Together with nourishing emollient panthenol and shine-boosting citric acid, the serum coated our hair in a lustrous vibrancy we’ve only ever seen in shampoo commercials. Despite relying on many rich oils to deliver gorgeous results, an even bigger surprise was that the cream felt weightless on our hair and absorbed in under 20 seconds.People with fine hair know that finding truly lightweight and non-greasy hair products is essential—otherwise, they’ll end up with oily-looking, weighed-down hair. Sprays are typically a good option for those with fine hair because they tend to be lighter than creams or serums, and we like this one in particular because of its ultra-light formula and fine mist. Rather than drenching hair in product, the mister on it does a nice job of evenly distributing the right amount of the formula. It contains propolis, a nutrient-rich, resin-like substance made by bees that helps to fortify the hair. After applying it to towel-dried strands and heat-styling, it helps smooth and soften the hair, which increases shine and decreases frizziness. While it’s definitely a bit expensive compared to similar options on the market, we think it’s an excellent choice for people with fine hair who struggle to find heat protectants that feel lightweight enough for them while still delivering on their claims.

Just a dime-size amount works to shield against heat damage, tame frizz, and flyaways, and nourish and soften strands. The formula is fantastic—the only thing we wish we could change is how strong the floral scent is. But considering that the fragrance doesn’t linger in the hair, we can easily look past this, and we really recommend it—especially for curly-haired consumers. What We Love: The formula leaves out sulfates, silicones, and other potentially harmful ingredients that could strip color and lead to dullness. Sure, it’s a little pricier than other protectants but we think it’s worth spending a little extra considering how, aside from a hairspray to hold our styles in place, we didn’t need to apply our usual finishing products, like rich oils and leave-ins. Additionally, UV absorbers which boast similar benefits and work alongside vitamin E act as an iron curtain against heat damage, both man-made in our hot tools and nature’s UV rays. We also appreciate the inclusion of lavender and peppermint extracts that may help spur hair growth. We hope to see the fruits of that with continued use, but in the meantime, we’ll just be enjoying the calming herbal scent of a ritzy spa.Heat tools for hair — like straighteners, curling irons and hair dryers — are one of the biggest culprits of hair damage. Although there is no way to totally reverse the damage, you can minimize some negative effects by applying a thermal protecting leave-in styling product. In fact, two studies published in the Journal of Cosmetic Science ( 1998 and 2011) have shown that several ingredients (which include copolymers, hydrolyzed protein and cationic surfactants) can minimize hair breakage when applied before thermal exposure. Though it only offers protection up to 425 degrees (a relatively lower threshold than others on the market), it provides a serious amount of value for the price. Huang ZR, Lin YK, Fang JY. Biological and pharmacological activities of squalene and related compounds: potential uses in cosmetic dermatology. Molecules. 2009;14(1):540-554. Published 2009 Jan 23. doi:10.3390/molecules14010540 Seriously, our hair looked healthier after just a few uses, and gave us so much shine, likely due to the addition of rose water. This super hydrator often flies under the radar, but it’s brimming with vitamins and antioxidants to soothe the scalp and protect our color-treated hair. With the addition of salicylic acid, a natural surfactant, the formula naturally mitigates oil production. What We Love: A trio of emollient-rich oils drenched our hair in moisture, effectively smoothing hair and taming flyaways after one use.

What We Love: Filled with natural ingredients taken directly from the source, our fine, delicate hair seemed to better withstand heat and looked fuller. But that’s not all: When we dug a little deeper into the formula we uncovered shiitake mushroom, rosemary, and sage, all of which work to strengthen and maintain the health of the hair, and all its conditioning, shine-enhancing effects. If you’re using it on wet hair before you blow dry, Nai’vasha recommends applying it directly after towel drying the hair. “If it’s a spray, delicately and thoroughly mist from roots to ends, then, paddle brush throughout for even distribution,” she says. Along with honey, glycol helps the hair cuticle retain moisture, in turn giving our strands extra radiance that make us just want to touch and tousle it. Meanwhile, propolis, a material that bees use to build hives, is another key ingredient that has anti-inflammatory and hair-strengthening benefits. As a bonus, we felt better leaving the house without a hat since the formula has a UV filter for an extra layer of safety against the sun.

The same can be said for creams—separate your hair into even sections and apply it liberally. Be sure you wait for it to fully absorb into your strands before going over it with your hot tool. You can usually tell by touching your hand to your hair and noticing if there’s a significant amount of residue. Iudina also suggests looking for formulas with protein, like spirulina protein, which “works great for frizz control and smoothness,” she says. We’re fans of the Kérastase Résistance Ciment Thermique Blow Dry Primer in this regard because its formula has proteins and amino acids galore that strengthened our hair and boosted elasticity. We loved how well it absorbed into damp hair and worked to smooth fried ends, reduce frizz, and enhance shine. Though the brand recommends using a dime-size to a quarter size-amount, we recommend starting with just a dime-size amount and slowly adding more if needed—the formula is lightweight and residue-free in the hair, that is, unless you over-apply. All-in-all, we’re really impressed with this heat protectant, and we recommend it to anyone who prefers cream formulas and needs to tame frizz—regardless of your hair type. We found that it worked wonderfully on a variety of testers with different hair types. It was lightweight enough not to weigh down fine hair, and it was hydrating enough to help smooth and nourish dry lengths and ends on straight and curly hair. We also love that, in addition to shielding against heat damage and adding shine, it gave the hair some serious bounce. If a spray formula appeals to you, this one is a fantastic choice. What makes this cream a triple threat is the hearty dose of beeswax in the formula, releasing a tsunami of moisturizing fatty acids and strand-strengthening antioxidants that gave our hair such a noticeable softness and glossy shine that we felt like even our grown-out highlights had a new life and radiance to them. Even better, the protein-rich castor oil in the formula keeps working as the cream continues to sink into strands to repair frazzled ends and prevent new ones from starting.

Of course, the number one rule is always to use it before applying any kind of heat – that means blow drying, hot rollers, flat irons, and curling wands. Whether you’re using a cream or a spray, the key to applying any heat protectant is ensuring it's distributed throughout the hair. Just like with sunscreen, if you miss a spot it’s prone to the adverse effects of heat. Once you apply it, it feels totally weightless in the hair, and it won’t transfer onto your hands as you’re styling. It helps to tame a bit of frizz and add a nice amount of shine, making it a fitting option if you have dull strands. Though we do wish that it felt a bit more hydrating like other serums and creams, it remains a great choice for people with fine hair or those that don’t need an extra boost of moisture. Sometimes we still needed to apply an additional serum to our ends as they still looked a little dry after using the primer, but considering how well it worked otherwise, we’re more forgiving of this con.
