About this deal

My kids always love it when we do a play dough activity. They love to use their imaginations and be creative. So when they saw these blank play dough mats, they knew what to do and were very excited to get started! It also gives kids a chance to be creative, and make something with their hands, as well as being a great sensory experience. Choose your favorite color and roll and squish the dough to make all kinds of shapes. There is so much benefit in children being able to identify and name their feelings, so that they can understand their own emotions in different circumstances. This skill will be vital all the way through their lives, as they grow. Get out your pots of play dough and explain to your child that you’re going to make some play dough faces. If you have different coloured play dough, model the language as you make the face(s) (“I’m making a green nose and yellow eyebrows”)

The first 8 are included in this printable play dough mat set, but you can expand the activity and use the blank faces to explore other emotions and talk about what kind of situations can make us feel these emotions. Here are our family’s play dough faces, mostly finished. See the play dough flower in the hair of the play dough person on the left? Maia came up with a special technique for making those with a garlic press. What does a worried face look like, and how do you create that shape from play dough? What kind of things make you feel worried? Silly Face Playdough Mat If your child is interested, you can also make the letters of the alphabet to spell out the names of each feeling written at the top of each playdoh mat. The Best Play Dough and Accessories for Playdough Mats.

Play dough is one of the most popular and age old activities for children all ages. This fun, activity reinforces body part vocabulary and allows your child to explore some emotions in a multisensory learning experience. Learning to accept them and get comfortable with them is not always easy – but let’s talk about it! Angry Face Playdough Mat You can cover your entire face with a play dough skin as Maia did above or just add your facial features directly to the bowl. Our set of free printable emotions play dough mats includes 10 different play dough mats to use and re-use. My (just barely) 3-year-old was far more liberal with her face decorating. She just put clumps of play dough all over the mat. But we did discuss basic facial features such as eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair.

You can use poke-ins such as googly eyes, buttons, or beads to add detail to your play dough face if you like. When we are laughing, how do we feel? Talk about the things that make us laugh, and explore different ways of making a laughing face out of play dough, or making some silly funny faces. Scared Face Playdough Mat A couple of pots of Play dough – different colours if you have them but not essential. You can make this yourself or use shop bought play dough – we won’t judge! For my 3 year old I was able to make a model for him to visually see what to do and then gave him the verbal directions on how to make the eyes, nose, and mouth. My one year old was even able to join in on the fun! She was able to squish, pull, and poke the Playdough! It was a great opportunity for us to talk about different emotions. Steps on what to do Fine motor skills – including hand and finger strength, grasping, manual dexterity and more pre-writing skills.

Teaching about the latest events?

Draw the outline of head on each piece of multicultural construction paper that you would like to use. You can also trace a template of a head. The goal is not for kids to make a perfect face, but rather, to learn about facial features, exercise creativity and imagination and develop fine motor skills. Less than a year from the time it was first sold as an off-white modelling compound, Play-Doh eventually branched out to multiple colours. It continues to expand and evolve into the rainbow modelling toy that we know and love. Play-Doh Is Safe for Children (and Adults too) If your child needs some help with emotions then see if they can copy some pictures – you can Google images or we like the Sparkle Box ones here

Talk about the body parts as you put them together. Preschool children will probably know the basics (eyes, nose, mouth, ears etc) but will be learning more complex words such as eyelashes, eyebrows etc so talk about these are they make their play dough face. Giving kids the vocabulary to name their own emotions is really helpful, and this hands on activity opens up the topic in such a simple and easy way. List of Emotions and Feelings for KidsMaking play dough faces is so much fun and a great way for kids to learn about their body while developing fine motor skills.
