About this deal

Slow Drying acrylics ( Golden Open Acrylic Colours) have an extended open time. This property allows acrylic artists to work with techniques usually restricted to oils. Best used in thin applications, these paints are not suitable for impasto techniques. If used in a stay wet palette their colour can remain usable for weeks – reducing the chance of paint wastage. Daler Rowney: Daler Rowney's acrylic paints are another good brand to consider with their consistency, vibrancy and ease of use. They also have a wide range of paints for different types of artists, from students to professionals. Depending on the intent you have with your art, each paint type will have advantages and disadvantages. When you are squeezing paint onto your palette it’s important to consider the scale of your work and how much colour you will need. Even though stay wet palettes will keep your mixes fresh, it’s best to only squeeze out as much colour as you need to prevent wastage. Preparing Your Area

Canvas Pads containing primed canvas fabric – Loxley or Fredrix– are also available if you prefer the genuine texture of canvas over paper. They offer the feel of canvas but without the storage issues. One more big thing to think about is the grade of paint. Most brands produce student and professional grade paints. It's important to know the difference.. Professional grade acrylics on the other hand, are designed for professional artists and advanced students. They are made with higher quality pigments and binders and have a greater color intensity, lightfastness, and permanence than student grade acrylics. They handle better than student grade acrylics due to a smoother consistency. You'll also find that they have a higher price tag than student grade acrylics.Stretched Canvas is perhaps the most common painting surface. It has a long history of use, and offers a good support to ensure your painting will stand the test of time. Today’s artists have much more choice in the surfaces they paint on. Golden: Golden's heavy body and fluid acrylics, another very popular brand, are known for their high color intensity. They are also known for their unique viscosities and consistencies. Their fluid acrylics are especially worth a try if you are looking for a unique experience. The pigment PR206 used for Quinacridone Burnt Orange was discontinued by the supplier. After trying to develop an alternative hue, we realised we couldn’t identically replace this unique Quinacridone pigment, and decided to discontinue the color in Heavy Body and Soft Body. Student grade acrylics are designed for beginners and students who are just starting out with acrylic painting. They are generally less expensive than artist grade acrylics and are often made with lower quality pigments and binders. As a result, they may not have the same level of color intensity, lightfastness, or permanence as artist grade acrylics. They also dry faster and may not handle as well as artist grade acrylics.

Highly versatile, dries to a low gloss surface on high impasto areas and a soft satin finish on thinner applications. If you have a stiff, dried up brush that you are trying to rescue you may be able to remove the paint with Masters’ Brush Cleaner and Preserver, Zest-it Acrylic Brush Cleaner and Reviver or Loxley Brush Cleaner and Preserver. Once you have settled on the paint you are buying, it will be time to consider the range of colours in your palette. If you are starting out then it may be advisable to buy a set. Generally these contain a good selection of mixing colours that will be enough to get you going – some even have a few accessories.

Another important quality to look out for is colour shift – that is how much the paint changes colour as it dries. Minimising this removes the need to compensate for changes in colour and the best acrylic paints dry much like the colour you get initially. If you're looking to buy artists' quality paints, you'll notice that some colors are much more expensive than others (although still cheaper than oil paints). This is because some pigments are very hard to obtain. Some manufacturers will group their paints according to " series" with " 1" being the cheapest and " 7" the most expensive. Typically the earth colors are the cheapest, while the colors derived from cadmium can cost up to four times as much! Some brands offer cheaper options by substituting with synthetic pigments, but they will likely have a lower permanence rating and less color intensity. You can spot this on the product by looking for the word "hue" after the pigment name. With that said, I use some of the "hue" colors in my art and I'm quite satisfied with the quality. Student grade paints keep their prices economical by replacing costly pigments with less expensive alternatives. They also contain higher levels of additives and extenders. For example higher series pigments – like Cadmium and Cobalt – command a high price in artist grade paints. In student ranges you will see them replaced with ‘hues’ – like Cadmium Red Hue and Cobalt Blue Hue. These substitutions offer similar properties and colour to the genuine pigments, but without the associated price tag. Cobalt Blue is made using a single pigment, whereas Cobalt Blue Hue is made from three pigments.

If stretched canvases are too bulky then you may prefer to work on canvas board or painting panels. These surfaces are much thinner, so are easier to store if you don’t have much storage space available. Winsor & Newton: Winsor & Newton's Professional Acrylics are considered to be one of the best in terms of color intensity and permanence. They offer a wide variety of colors and is suitable for artists of all skill levels. Acrylic paints made from high quality eco-friendly water based pigments and finest acrylic emulsions. Series numbers are used to separate paints by cost. The higher the series the more expensive the colour – so Series 4 colours will cost more than Series 1. The price difference does not indicate any difference in quality. Rather that some colours are more costly to manufacture – so whether you’re buying from Series 1 or Series 4 the quality will be the same. Each of these colours from the Winsor & Newton Professional Acrylics range is a different price as they are from different series.

Due to pigment PR206 discontinuation by the supplier, we reformulated this color and replaced PR206 with PR179. The new color compared to previous can be considered brighter and more luminous in masstone. In undertone, the shade is slightly bluer than previous with the same color strength. Transparency (transparent color) and lightfastness remain the same. Liquitex Professional Acrylic Artist Colour Heavy Body comes from the world's bestselling brand in acrylic colours. Use in conjunction with Liquitex Inks and Liquitex Spray Paints for even greater speed and flexibility. The type of brushes you choose is mostly down to personal preference and your own painting technique. There are a few considerations to make before you take the plunge and invest in a good set of brushes. Long Handled and Short Handled Brushes
