The Air is the brand’s only other GHD hair dryer that’s still available after the GHD discontinued the GHD Aura. The feel of the Helios is a cut above, too. The plastic shell of the GHD Air feels a little rough to the touch by comparison, and the plastic shell of the Helios feels smoother, silkier – almost like silicone. It also replaces the hard plastic hook by the cable with a soft silicone loop which is attractively branded; the GHD name imprinted on a chrome-plated button. Similar branding appears on the rose gold grille, and even the holes in the filter and the shape of the impeller inside have an industrial beauty to them.

The GHD Air is now 10 years old and in terms of performance, the signs of ageing were starting to show. Depending on how hot the dryer gets this could cause unnecessary damage. With the concentrator nozzle attached to the Helios – a nozzle which has been made thinner with a curved edge designed to reduce turbulence –it took us just two minutes and 20 seconds to style our hair. Again, a minute faster than the Dyson Supersonic. The GHD hair dryer was built with physicists, engineers and styling professionals at GHD’s UK Research and Development lab in Cambridge. The brand claims it’s lighter and more powerful than its rivals and helps dry your hair faster while giving more styling control. GHD has even patented the shapes of the holes in the grille to make the dryer quieter, and it is. Noticeably so. The GHD Air wasn’t a loud dryer so we weren’t concerned going into this review, but it’s a nice improvement and brings the level of noise down to Dyson levels.

It almost toppled the Dyson Supersonic as our favourite hair dryer. We still switch between the two. We’ve already confirmed it’s lighter, but does it live up to the other claims? Yes – very much so! Its motor is marginally more powerful – up from 2,100w on the Air to 2,200w – and the holes in its grille have apparently been redesigned to reduce noise. It is noticeably less loud in real-world use, and when measured with a decibel meter, it’s a whole two decibels quieter than the Air. The Dyson may have been the reigning champion of the hair dryer world for four years now, but ghd is the first competitor worthy of the title. We didn’t even have to sacrifice hair quality and shine for this improved speed, either. After every use, our hair was almost frizz-free with only minimal flyaways and we never once had to resort to running straighteners over it to complete the look. Two weeks into testing and our hair definitely feels stronger and we’re seeing fewer breakages and less hair loss in the shower.
