Global food systems are clearly broken. They currently create unhealthy and unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, as well as enormous waste, and must be upgraded accordingly. Regulation of markets for the public good will be critical in this process. Achieving all this will not be easy, of course. Widespread, sustainable gains in wellbeing require active governments that are willing to reshape markets and pursue long-term visions for societies. This in turn requires political will and a sea-change in governments’ perceptions—unlikely without significant public pressure and mass mobilisation. But, given our proximity to so many tipping points, the default option is terrifying: environmental devastation, extreme economic disparities and fragilities, and potentially unbearable social and political tensions. Our atmosphere is made mostly of nitrogen and has plenty of oxygen for us to breathe. The atmosphere also protects us from incoming meteoroids, most of which break up in our atmosphere before they can strike the surface as meteorites. This year, Earth4All project lead and modeller Per Espen Stoknes is invited to give a talk at the assembly. The talk, “Creating a movement of minds, hearts and souls to upgrade our economies” will focus on overcoming the fatalism, anxiety and the helplessness many feel in the face of global climate disruptions, and instead, provide proper tools and narratives to doers: we need a new story of how to restart the economic system. Structure and Surface In our age of permanent crisis we can’t afford to be ‘single issue’ solvers. The concept of ‘multi-solving’ seeks to build long-term resilience while delivering short-term wellbeing and justice. Join experts in politics, gender, system dynamics and communications to delve into how multisolves work. This is a usefully robust way to go about things. Lots of people have ideas that they think might make a difference, from basic incomes to four day working weeks. It’s not often that anyone models these properly. Would they increase or reduce inequality? What about emissions? Do they raise or lower social tensions? Do they lead to improved wellbeing? And putting all these ideas together, what kind of programme will lead to long term prosperity for everyone on a stable planet?
