About this deal

Sandrine Dixson-Declève is co-president of the Club of Rome and has over 30 years of leadership in climate change, sustainability, innovation and energy. GreenBiz named her one of the 30 most influential women driving change in the low-carbon economy. She is a policy advisor, facilitator, TED speaker, teacher, and author of Quel Monde Pour Demain? Global food systems are clearly broken. They currently create unhealthy and unsustainable patterns of production and consumption, as well as enormous waste, and must be upgraded accordingly. Regulation of markets for the public good will be critical in this process. More systematic and effective regulation is necessary, not only with respect to food but also in markets for goods and services, finance, labour and land, and to those connected to nature and the environment. Achieving all this will not be easy, of course. Widespread, sustainable gains in wellbeing require active governments that are willing to reshape markets and pursue long-term visions for societies. This in turn requires political will and a sea-change in governments’ perceptions—unlikely without significant public pressure and mass mobilisation. But, given our proximity to so many tipping points, the default option is terrifying: environmental devastation, extreme economic disparities and fragilities, and potentially unbearable social and political tensions. Our atmosphere is made mostly of nitrogen and has plenty of oxygen for us to breathe. The atmosphere also protects us from incoming meteoroids, most of which break up in our atmosphere before they can strike the surface as meteorites. This year, Earth4All project lead and modeller Per Espen Stoknes is invited to give a talk at the assembly. The talk, “Creating a movement of minds, hearts and souls to upgrade our economies” will focus on overcoming the fatalism, anxiety and the helplessness many feel in the face of global climate disruptions, and instead, provide proper tools and narratives to doers: we need a new story of how to restart the economic system. One that is inclusive and engaging. UK Parliament Book launch

On the radio the other day, I heard a spot on big cat conservation throughout the world. I'm paraphrasing the results, but basically places where inequality is high and economic opportunity is scant, are also the worst places for big cats right now. In other words, where people are forced to think in the short-term, natural resources are plundered. In the next 50 years, the current economic system will drive up social tensions and drive down wellbeing. We can already see how inequality is destabilising people and the planet.” Limits to growth and planetary boundaries The Nobel Prize Teacher Summit is an international teacher conference where teachers from over 30 countries meet Nobel Laureates, top scientists and peace activists to discuss a theme of great importance in education. It's time to shift from the age of endless growth to an age of thriving in balance. This thought-provoking analysis proposes five critical turn-arounds for getting us there— each of them raising urgent issues for public discussion and action. Read on to explore possible futures for humanity and join the most vital debate of our times. But all is not lost: the fourth scenario, which involved significant economic and social transformations, allows for widespread increases in human welfare within Earth’s natural boundaries. This is the motivation behind Earth for All, a new report produced by the Club of Rome’s Transformational Economics Commission (of which I am a member) and a team of computer modellers.

Since we live here, you might think we know all there is to know about Earth. Not at all, actually! We have a lot we can learn about our home planet. Right now, there are many satellites orbiting Earth taking pictures and measurements. This is how we can learn more about weather, oceans, soil, climate change, and many other important topics. Structure and Surface In our age of permanent crisis we can’t afford to be ‘single issue’ solvers. The concept of ‘multi-solving’ seeks to build long-term resilience while delivering short-term wellbeing and justice. Join experts in politics, gender, system dynamics and communications to delve into how multisolves work. This is a usefully robust way to go about things. Lots of people have ideas that they think might make a difference, from basic incomes to four day working weeks. It’s not often that anyone models these properly. Would they increase or reduce inequality? What about emissions? Do they raise or lower social tensions? Do they lead to improved wellbeing? And putting all these ideas together, what kind of programme will lead to long term prosperity for everyone on a stable planet? Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity is set to make its debut in French on 27 September 2023, courtesy of the publishing house Actes Sud. A NASA camera on the Deep Space Climate Observatory satellite took this picture of the entire sunlit side of Earth from one million miles away.

Finance experts Frank van Gansbeke and James Vaccaro will then complement this need for a new economic architecture with deep shifts in our current Bretton Woods institutions and financial framework that underpins an economy and financial system that services people, planet and prosperity first and foremost.
